Worth modding 360 myself or should I buy premodded? Will I learn anything?

I'm getting a 360 within the next few weeks. I want it firmware upgraded and want to know if I will learn anything by buying the hardware (Blaster 360, $99, do I need anything else?) and doing it all myself. I could buy a premium console premodded from here for $480AU which will be cheaper but as a certified geek I wouldn't mind paying a bit extra if I learn something from it all. I've build, rebuilt and repaired more computers than I can count so I wouldn't feel lost opening a 360.

Is it worth the experience and hassle or should I go for the cheaper, easier option?

I dont believe the blaster helps out alot....Just lets you put a fix on without opening the xbox again..Still have to open it and fix it the first time....Also the 360 is very is to open and there are great threads and tutorials on here and great ppl will help ya....Its usually pretty simple to hack them

I know you've gota open it at least once to install the blaster, then use some dos application to extract the key and I'm sure there's more to it. I want to know if I will learn anything worthwhile from the whole process? will I pick up any minor tech skills that I may use someday in the future? If not I'd rather buy a premodded console.

i would just mod it yourself, however, since you will most likely be getting a lite-on drive console, if its cheaper to buy the premodded on than to buy the spear or the other equivalents to mod the lite-on drive, then i would go that route. but if you did mod a normal one and the equipment to mod it, (you dont need the blaster; waste of money) then you will be able to update the FW down the road for free.

I think that the only way you would benefit from modding it yourself is if you plan to mod other peoples for $$$.
