So, I've been out of the 360 scene for two or three years now.
I'm sitting on two stock units, and considering flashing one of them, I haven't checked to see which drive each one has.
My question(s) are as follows:
-When I did it(2006-early2007), every time XBL was updated, which at the time was frequent, you had to unmod your drive, then update, then re-mod the drive. It was a huge pain. Is this still the case, or is this no longer an issue?
-Are there multiple 'kinds' of flashes that serve different purposes, such as stealth, or being 'update-proof'?
-Given the assumption that I have all the technical know how, as well as the kit to open the system nice and easy, and to get it plugged in directly without any jimmy-rigging on the drive, but remembering that I've forgotten most of the specifics, what suggestions would you have for me? I'm planning to do this with a tutorial, and to make sure that I am indeed using the right firmware for the drive, etc; but beyond that, is there anything that might be 'easy' to forget, or anything that's changed since I last did this, which I should be aware of?
With the Samsung and BenQ drives you can just overwrite any firmware that is already on the drive. But with the Hitachi, it is safe to flash the original back to it, and then flash the patched firmware.
Currently I am using a VIA 6421 chipsetsata card, and Jungle Flasher and it works great. I love how the BenQ's and Samsung's are able to flashed through GUI now.
The Lite-ON is a little bit tricky with the VIA but there is some helpful info here at AfterDawn that will help you get through.
As of right now, I have applied several updates to my console that is running modified firmware without an issue.
The newest version of Jungle Flasher comes with a very well put together tutorial. Right when it starts up, click the User Guide.
Hope this can get you going in the right direction. :)
