Alright guys, my hp deskjet 920c has just grown a little long in the tooth and lacks some important features I want. What do you recommend for me as the best inkjet printer?

Here's what I need in a new printer (in order of priority):

1) Ability to print printable DVD-R's (and please share your experience with this!)
2) Ability to Print 10.8 inches of an 11 inch sheet of paper (my old HP only did 10.5, and I'm always resizing/shrinking covers)
3) Cheap 'Refurb' Ink Cartriges. HP ink is still far pricier than most other brands off the big EBay refurb market. Mine are about $12/cart while my friend's Cannon is $4/cart. I'd also like to hear from Epson owners about how cheap they can get decent ink and the other little quirks.
4) Good ink management software. I don't want the printer telling me that it's out of ink with half a tank left. I also don't want the printer's last 5 prints to be sort of good...it should print well right up to the second the ink is out. I've even hear that Epson printers lock you out (disable further printing) well before the ink is truly dry...is that true?
5) Excellent print quality. I don't care about dpi, as the most I will typically ever use is 300-600dpi. What I DO want is good print reproduction. I think you guys know what I mean...who really uses 4800dpi? (or whatever printers have these days)
6) A good feeder. My old HP always wanted to grab several sheets when I fed it heavy gloss paper. It was okay with regular paper, but I should never have to hand feed the printer to avoid jams.
7) One that rarely locks up or "acts funny". The HP just had too many odd episodes where it kept running paper though it printing garbage after trying to halt a print.
8) Quick text print rates. I print lots of medical documents before work and need to grab them as I walk out the door. On the other hand, I could care less about how quickly photos print (I just want a good job there). An excellent 2 sided print system would also be nice.
9) Ability to print 11x17 paper. It'd be nice to have for wall decoration/projects.

I'd love to hear what you recommend, and why in the context of my above requests.

I would recommend the Epson R800 or even the Epson R300 if your budget doesn't allow for the 800 but #9 REALLY kills your choices.

Keep in mind the list is ordered by priority, so I can go without #9...though it would be nice.

Preyzuess, good find. Interestingly the R200 isn't listed on the Epson website.

Still waiting on my back ordered R800 ...

Ok , I have it hooked up and it is good/very good. The difference between the r200 and r300 is the r300 has the memory card reader slots and of course the r300m has the little screen. "that is it". The print engine and ink etc. are the same. If you look on the epson usa sight it does list it but only under support not products for sale , weird. but go to epson UK sight and it is all over there. I picked my up from Staples for $98.00 and change. A disc takes aprox 3 min. full coverage dvd type label. and I am still counting how many you can do I am estimating 250 or so.

I'm down to about 10% in a couple of the original ink cartridges in my R300 and I've printed ~115 DVDs, maybe 10 CDs, and several photos. Cartridges are ~$15ea (x5) + $20 for black (after tax) = ~$95.

I do all my regular printing on an HP PSC 750 and I use legal paper for covers.

I have printed 153 dvds and have about half ink left in all but black is slightly lower. I should be able to get 200+ out of them before having to change a ink color. Also I found Epson Stylus Photo R300/R300M/RX500 Printer Compatible Ink Combo ( T048120, T048220, T048320, T048420, T048520, T048620 )44.50 for the 6 pack set. from Supermedia.com

By the way I love this little epson r200 I just wish it was faster, but for 100.00 it rocks!!!

inkraven.com sells compatible R300 cartridges for $6.95 color and $7.95 black. Shipping is free if you order over $50.00. One each of the color and 2 of the black will get you free shipping. I have used their cartridges and have had no problems with them. I can't verify the price right now because their web site is having a problem. They have one of their offices where I live (Phoenix, AZ) so I usually just go there and pick them up. Fortunately it's even on the side of town that I live on. I usually don't have such good luck.

ive had the r200 for a while now, its an awesome printer for very cheap. The ink cartridges are also compatible with the r300 so you can find them for around 50 bucks for all 6.

ive printed about 50 8x11 photographs which i use as dvd sleeves, plus 30 dvd's, thats about all you can do on one ink tank. You will end up using most of your ink and will probobly need to buy all 6 when it comes down to it. The yellow and black run out a little quicker, but the only 2 that you wont need to refill are the dark blue and cyan. they will be around 20 percent left. Its still better to buy them all though. and just save the ones with 20 percent left, youll end up having to realign the ink everytime one runs out.

Where did you get all 6 cartiges for $50?

Only the original Epson ink has been proven safe at this point.

I love the disc prints and photo quality on my R200 (I bought one), but ink goes fast and it is VERY pricey.

yeah thats what i didnt like about it, the ink is more expensive than the printer.

but here are two links. i just bookmarked both of these because they are in california and ship faster. one is cheaper but charges shipping, one is a little more expensive but shipping is free, so if you only want one cartridge or somethin thats where to go.

top one gives you 3 blacks in the bundle, i like that site better cause its free shipping. (type 5off in the coupon spot to get 5 bucks off)

I think I'll have to hear some long-term results to start in with the generic ink...too many clogged print heads/leaking (no one-way valves i the generics)/software locking out options to trust them just yet. Keep us updated after you go through several carts!

i've used an entire set of generics, and they worked perfect. the one from the bottom link. At first they print funny but after you realign and do all the normal new cartidge troubleshooting it is just like an epson brand, Same quality and reliability, never had a clog and ive printed about 200 8x11 photographs, as well as 50 dvd's. It might just be my imagination though but it seemed like the generic cartriges ran out faster. I think i just printed more black pictures though.

I'm using Canon i865 and I'm very happy with it.
The i865 uses:
6bk and 3ebk (black)
6Y, 6M and 6C for colors.
Hey - here is the good stuff, pictures of the Ritek disc, in the tray, the printer, and the CD-R printing system for the Canon i865 printer. You must "slide it into" the printer at the front, when you like to print on CD's/DVD's

Hope you can see the pics. Any questions, just ask.

Is the i865 an import? Does it require an adapter for US power outlets?

Antons, I notice that your Ritek looks exactly like some GQ disks that I have from Fry's Electronics that are made by Lead Data. I usually use Ritek or Be All. I've found that The Ritek prints with the brightest colors (on my R300 anyhow) and I like the Be All because you can print right down to the hole in the middle. I've had no problems with any of these disks in my Pioneer 107D, but in my Lite On 411S the Lead Data don't always work so good. How much was that Canon Printer that you have? Just curious.

I live in Iceland. The price would match $215 .. But such stuff is alway more expensive here..

The i865 is a euro model. It would req. a transformer for USA. But I think there is a i860 model wich is almost identical to the i865, except the CD printing unit.

The disc's are true Ritek G04. But may even look like some other disc's
