put the fan on the cpu only to avoid that or it will fry the cpu. cpu is the large heatsink

i had done that before it still did it. is it true that 2 red lights is like a warning stage before 3 red lights, so does that mean i atleast cured it of the rrod? also after a couple seconds my fan shuts down (with the 2 red lights)

like stealth said, your cpu is overheating. if your fan is placed directed on top of the cpu heatsink and no where elese and your box still 2redrings and shuts down after just a few seconds then take a look at how you attached the heatsink. Did you put thermal paste between the cpu and the heatsink? Did you put on the way it came off? Did you put too many washers or too thick washers on top of the mobo preventing the heatsink from touching the cpu? Check all this and let us know.

SUCCESS! I pretty much started from scratch except this time i cleaned the dyes very well and used arctic silver instead of Zerotherm. now its in the process of overheating. woot. also the kit i got advised me to use nylon washers + metal washers on each side but like you guys said there could've been too much space between the heatsink and dye so i took out the metal washers and just used nylon.

yea u have to clean every little spec of old thermal paste off, it should be like a mirror when u are done. i always use a metal washer and a nylon washer on each side of the board. with the nylon side touching the board...just fixed another lastnight

hmm, well there are 2 different fixes i was looking at, one of them from xbox360fixit.com says to use nylon, the one i got form ebay said metal + nylon. since i was desperate i took out the metal ones. We'll see, if it goes bad again ill try AS5 w/ metal and nylon.

how tight did u make the screws on the heatsinks. sometimes either loosening them or tighting them helps. if u tighten them make sure u do it slow and not a lot at once. if u go to tight it will damage it beyond repair.

okay so i loosened up them abit, and it got to the regular green lights then went to 2 lights. so then i tightened them, went back to 3 lights. should i just try starting from scratch tomorrow? put some new thermal paste on and use metal + nylon instead of just nylon this time

i would use the washers yes. bolt>metal washer>Nylon washer>360 board>nylonwasher>metalwasher>heatsink in that order
i also do the eraser fix to the memory chips.
http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=591894
thats the original posting of it. it isnt the end of rrod lol but it does apply more pressure to those chips than the little things MS puts on there sometimes. u gotta cut them like 3-4 ml thick and just slightly larger than the area of the chip. attach with light glue just so they dont fall off when assembling. it might make the ports look like they wont line up but when u put the screws in to atach to the metal tray it will even out. so then just overheat it again and see what it does. i fixed one without rrod but it had no video at all just sound using this.

what is the rrod error code now that you have put things back together? what are the thickness of your nylons on top of the mobo beneath heatsinks?

The 2 red lights means it has overheated. Your supposed to get that error during the xclamp fix
