hmm... is there restrictions on the size of external hard drive that xbox will recognize? I was under the impression this only worked with flash drives (thumb drives), the OP was asking if he/she could use a hard drive, not a flash drive.

if i remember correctly it might be 32gb partitions. so if u partition the hdd into 32gb segments all fat32 i think u can see them all as idividual storages aka portable storage to the 360...i could be wrong. but would probably need some kind of partitioning software to do this

awesome stealth!!! that is info I didn't have. 32gb or smaller right?I will try this this weekend as I have a TB drive nearly full of movies and when plugged to the xbox it never was recongized. I have a simply linux utility that can partition this drive as many times as needed. I will try this Sunday night and report. I don't have the name of the utility handy or I would have posted it. It is on my desktop and I am 1000's of miles from home right now. I will try it sunday night.... maybe with a smaller drive cuz my TB is NTSF therefore requiring a bunch of cutting and pasting back to the drive once formatting and partitioned into 32gb sections. I will try with a 80 gig from an old laptop first. Thanks !

Yea i would tryu the 80 first as well. im sure formatting a 1tb drive into many segments would take a while to say the least. and then if it didnt work it would be a waste. let us know what happens.

i dont think it has to be in 32gig max partitions, my 640 gig works fine with the avis on it. just make sure its in fat32 format and all will work out.

32gb is the max that WINDOWS will be able to format the drive. Macs and Linux can format any amount, though there are utilities that you can use on a windows computer that will do it. "HP format utility" (google it) is a really quick format utility that works. Also, there is a cross OS program between linux and windows (I think gparted) that works too.
I've had my 1Tb harddrive work with my 360 without to much problems. The problem though is that you CANNOT watch HD video files on your 360 if they fall under two categories.
1. If the file is over 4gb then you can't. The problem with FAT32 is that it cannot support more than 4gb files.
2. If the video file is in .mkv the 360 doesn't support it. .mkv is a file type that allows for HD quality movies while not on a disc.
So no watching any HD or Bluray "file backups" on your 360, but other than that you should be fine.
EDIT: Forgot to tell you that formatting a 1Tb harddrive will take a long time, for me it took around 3-4 hours with the HP format utility.

won't hfs+ work to format your drive?
I think the 360 can read it, plus it gets around the file size issues
