Okay so im fixing a friends rrod xbox 360. This is the fourth or fifth one ive done and had no problems with the others. I put all the screws in and everything tested it out and now i got the red ring for about a second when i turn it on and then i just the top and bottom left quadrant turn red saying its overheating. Is there anything in particualr i could do to fix this. Also i used actic silver thermal compund. Could it be that i just put to much on?

Sounds like it's either uneven, too much thermal paste or too little thermal paste.

Did you do both the cpu and gpu? What method are you using? What version is the board?

did you overheat it so that it would fix the red ring? you know when you do the xclamp fix you turn it on with the fans off and let it run until you get 2 lights instead of 3 and then you let it run for about 2-3 minutes after that and you turn it off and let it cool completely then tighten the screws up and it should work.

Mike you should know it doesn't matter if you run it after it overheats or not. When the xbox gets the overheating error the power is cut to the cpu and the gpu. Obviously when the power is cut they start to cool down.

Barons77, Mike is giving you good advice.

You need to overheat your xbox to reflow the broken solder joints under your processors.

Depending on what error you have and what rrod fix you tried is the way you should fix it. I always use the llamma xclamp fix which requires drilling. Then i set the fan so it cools only the cpu and I set a piece of paper over the dvd drive so it seperates the gpu from the cpu. You want to cool the cpu while the gpu gets hot enough to melt the solder. Many people try to just turn it on without any airflow to either heatsink. This is one of the many reasons why the rrod comes back or people fail to fix the system.

While cooling the cpu and overheating the gpu the xbox will still keep heating up. If the cpu doesn't have any air flow the xbox will cut all power when it displays an overheating error.

here's a link to llamma's tutorials

Let me know if you need more help.

For future refrence, when i ask a question so i can give you more accurate answers, answer the question in the next post.
