Despite all of its accomplishments, there has been one glaring defect with the Xbox 360, the infamous Red Ring of Death (RROD) brought on by overheating of the system.
At first the software giant denied the RROD problem but eventually owned up to the console's failures and set aside $1.1 billion USD to cover extending the warranty of the system to three years for any system hit with RROD.

I guess people past the 3 year mark who get RROD are going to be considered a thing of the past too. Though I guess 3 years is a pretty good warranty.
I haven't had a RROD problem since last spring so hopefully it is gone.

My friend had the RROD problem. Got it fixed a few months ago. Now his 360 won't read games. It's not under warranty anymore. Gonna be a $100+ fix from MS. On the other hand, my other friends PS3 stopped reading everything. $150 to fix. This is one expensive gen for console gaming. I reduced the time I spend on my PS3 just so I can avoid aggravating it :(

I really hope RROD is a thing of the past. I am glad microsoft put some time into this to alleviate the problem but with that praise being given, RROD should have never happened in the first place. If i remember correctly when PS1 was first released some of the earlier units had problems with the lens b/c of being played for too many hours straight causing heat. It wasnot as big a deal as RROD but my friend played his for minumum 24 hours straight if i recall, cant remeber exactly and its started having problems reading the disc. Sony repaired it and told him it had gotten too hot. This was just a minor issue but overheating has been seen in videogaming consoles since they stopped using cartridges to hold game data. Microsoft had no excuse and could have easily had X-amount of the consoles tested to see how long they could be used without killing the power and how possible overheating would affect the consoles lifespan. I love my xbox360 and have had no issues with heat. Their is also another defect i have noticed they also should address and i dont see how they could have missed it either. When the console is housed vertical some of the games keep spinnging for a few seconds after the tray is ejected from the console which can cause some fine line scaratches on disc. This is not due to the console being bumped while the disc in spinning as i am aware of that issue. Nintendo may not have the my vote as favorite console b/c i choose some of the more mature games for xbox360 but at least nintendo has always showed good quality with their consoles.

Yea, I love my PS3 but whoever came up with that 1% failure rate is full of sh!t. I'm currently on my 3rd PS3, although this one has been workign for a while. But my friend just had his crap out two weeks ago with the 'not reading any media' problemas well. Only advice I can give is to get the extended warranty. Either its random bad luck that me and one of my buddys have now had 5 PS3s or somebody isnt giving the real numbers.

Just have him go on Ebay and purchase a replacement drive. If he or someone knows how to open the 360. Have them swap the drive card with the new drive so it works in his current system and won't be banned by MS. It's youtube video's on it and should work. I have done this to 10 systems so far and it works instead of paying MS that extra money. But it's up to him to try that.

I have 2 PS3's, the first one is a 60gig launch day system while the other is the 80 gig Metal Gear Solid edition. Both have work with no problems to report. As for my 360, I'm on my second one but I haven't really used it much in the past year so I don't know if it is a piece of crap like the first one was(which lasted just over the one year warranty. go figure!)

Still on my first 360 for almost two years now. Only issue I have is with Halo 3 constantly getting a disc read error when a custom game map starts to load. All other games run fine.

Microsoft has identified the main cause of RRoD and fixed it.
However, due to the idea of first perception, I believe they will never be able to fully escape the "XBox360 equals RRoD" dilemma.
Personally I haven't had my 360 RRoD and I've had it since the Christmas it came out.
Hopefully they did indeed fix the RRoD problem and it won't effect future consoles as much. Due to the way technology works you can't totally fix something like RRoD but you can take major steps to correct it.
Peace

Has anyone else noticed the disc still spinning for a few seconds as you eject the disc and the tray comes out. That is for those that have their xbox360 in the vertical position. I have read a lot of others reporting the same issue on other sites.

I personally think is either bad luck or the owner do not take care of their systems. Some people don't even try to clean out the fan for the systems, and they might have pets at home so the hair would get clogged, so the system over heats. Although i know some people clean their drives such as air blower (which i suggest to do) to clean the fans and kept their system longer than anyone else.

Just curious Zippy, but how do you know the jasper models arenot any better. If they have 1.5 out of ten then you are right. That is still horrid.

All I can say is I'm on 360 #4 and my PS3 is still going strong. They were both purchased dec. 16th 06. Just got 360 #4 back from the repair center last week. So thing of the past??? I doubt it. Their Quality control dept is a joke. I work in manufacturing and if my company rolled out products with the kind of failure rate the xbox has allot of you would be walking to work regularly.

Well from 30% to 10-15%, half I can admit are the "refreshed" units being sent back out but still it stinks as MS screwed up so badly that there seems to be no end of it but I am sure if anything the new fail rate is at the very most a 3rd of the old.

60% on the line itself, 30% on the shelf at retail.
Its a mess I hope the newest units halve the fail rate.

I bought my first 360 in november last year,i waited mostly because of cost, however once it became apparent the tossers at ms had let all us xbox fanboys/girls down..(nothing pisses me off more than giving those nintendo & ps3 retard owners fuel to add to a fire) *lol*.. i also waited longer to see if they would fix an issue that should never have arisen in the bloody first place, yeah anyway mine seems fine tho i would'nt dare put it in a cabinet even if it was an open front type with a whole stack of holes drilled into the rear of it (yep i tried it out),too much heat was staying near the 360,ended up putting it on a mobile trolley thing i made so as to keep it near the front door (front door, lounge door & back door face each other so opening all 3 gets a good air flow, kinda like a poor mans mini wind tunnel),yeah anyway the 360 feels cooler to the touch now, still cracks me up the power cable has it's own fan

wow, just outta curiousity, how much time are these people spending on their 360s or other systems for all these over heating issues to arise. Or how are you taking care of it. I had my 1st gen 360 (2 weeks after release) and not had a problem with it. Bought anouther ffor a different tv about a year ago and no problems with it either. Then I read that people are on their 3 to 5th?? Maybe I'm just lucky

Its basically 2-3 in 10, meaning there are 2-3 times as many people with good units.

Yeah, unless UPS breaks your 360 when you are sending it off for repair and Microsoft refuses to fix it and UPS refuses to take responsibility for it. Then you are out of luck, like me. Meanwhile, sold all my 360 games and I bought a PS3. No worries of dying + BRD! I reset my my 360 via the towel trick and use it for a media extender for the bed room.

I sold off mine too not worth the pain, want to get a newer unit though.
