Minors can purchase violent video games in California, again

article published on 23 February, 2009

A controversial California rule that banned the sale of violent video games to minors has now been reversed thanks to a ruling by a federal appeals court. The three-judge panel from the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit added that the decision was unconstitutional. The 2005 law prohibited "the sale of 'patently offensive' games to players under 18." Senator Leland ... [ read the full article ]

There are protective parents in every religion, including atheism. You can't pin this bull exclusively on the religious.

Truthfully you can't. Just like you can't pin the statement of, "Violent games make violent people". Most people that were violent were violent in some way to begin with. Disturbed even. But you can't blame the California Legislature for being concerned about the well being of today's youth, particularly when we have eleven to twelve year old's being able to buy games like Grand Theft Auto, and then the parents allowing it because they let the TV become the baby sitter. What this will do is force the Californian parent to be more mindful over their children, flat out and simple.

And once again, you can't blame it on religion. But if you want to blame it on something, blame it on the consciousness of the intelligent US Citizen

Where did the first commenter get this "religious" crap from? There isn't one word.........NOT ONE SINGLE SYLLABLE about 'religion' playing a role in this so PIPE DOWN! This is what's wrong with free thinking. People interpret their own sides.........pass it along and then get everyone in a tizzy. Rumors also start this way and it's childish and just brainless. Stifle yourself and stop making yourself look like a ninny. Recognise that most "religious" groups as you stated would ABSOLUTELY favor the age restriction and whether or not parents or politicians or crop farmers are religious this is a common sense issue.

The age restriction on violent games is a given and I'm ashamed to call myself an American knowing that a state in our country has reversed this. You put kids in front of violent games constantly or violent movies constantly or violent parents/friends........WHATEVER........and they will adapt. Not to take away the individual responsibility of making the right decision but as human beings...........we're all subject to "conditioning"

I'm sorry that some of you don't realize this but religion and their "morals" have always played a large part in law making.
Separation of church and state my ass.

Parents deserve to be able to make their own decisions about what is and isn't appropriate for their children and at some point the children have a say in it as well.
Generally blanketing a topic and saying that it's best if we all just do as we're told is bullshit, common sense obviously doesn't even enter into it looser_ur.

Hikari, I agree that at many points laws can be chalked up to religions, like the Prop 8 sh*te in California right now, but while we're talking about bull blanket statements let's not put out one for religion always having a big hand in lawmaking.

I'd also like to point out that not only is Atheism a religion, but morals aren't exclusive to those who believe in a certain God.

Looser, why not just keep your children from violent games yourself? Do you think it should be the governments responsibility to decide whats inappropriate for minors, or the minor's parents?

If they have crap parents that can't control them, then yes, but that's on them.

Actually "Atheism" is NOT a religion.......it's a belief. Yes 'religion' and 'belief' are similar but they are also different. The "ism" indicates "The act of"..............but I understand your point.

As for your lunatic sense of thinking regarding "why don't I just keep my kids blah blah blah"...............
It's that mentality that allows serial killers out into society. We have movie rating, driving ages/restrictions, alcohol ages/restrictions. Under your menality, why don't we just let parents decide for their own kids about when to drink, drive and what movies to see. BECAUSE PEOPLE LIKE YOURSELF (and many many many others on this site and in the world) WHO SHOULD PROBABLY BE BANNED FROM PROCREATING.......AREN'T. I wouldn't trust the lot of ya' behind the big red button that decides the fate of us all. Now........me on the other hand......I could honestly be behind that button and make a fairly accurate and right-on decision 98% of the time. The world could only be that lucky.

Jeez people........look at the BIG picture and get your heads out of the clouds. I am fortunately one of the small group of people that GOD granted a significant amount of common sense and reasoning skills to be able to see the BIG picture.

Oh, I think I can sort of see where you're coming from now... You're one of those people who need to think they're special. I can guarantee you that you aren't.

According to dictionary.com, one definition of Religion is "A set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe" Atheism is the belief that there is no God, and that the universe was not created by a form of God or Deity, that it happened because of whatever it is they believe, depending on who you talk to. Therefore: A religion.

Video games =/= Alcohol. That's just silly. I see the need for that law because there are all kinds of ways alcohol can f*ck you up if taken in excess or while your body is developing.

Video games =/= Driving. I also see the reason for the age limit on driving, I wouldn't trust a kid behind the wheel, people could get killed if the kid messes up, which he will.

And, believe it or not, just like with movies rated R, under this law all you need is an adult with ID proving they're over 18 to buy an M-rated game. A parent who doesn't care what the kid sees could just buy it for the kid, with or without this stupid law.
I'm against it mainly because it takes away a responsibility from parents, and gives it to the government.

"Under your mentality" we should all be eunuchs living in styrofoam play-pens. Look at the big picture.

well thanks gov't, now my minor of a child can go purchase "ultra mega gore-fest hentai VII". a videogame portraying the life and times of neotokyo after the laser wars, staring yukimaru, a time shifting tentacle porn monster that must seduce and destroy all of the neotokyan fembot roboslaves that terrorize the land..."

but anyway, i dont think the "kids" need to be buying these types of games for themselves. parents should be responsible somewhere. but dont think for a minute that violent games make violent people. i havent been arrested for violent crimes (or any crimes), and i've played most violent games made in the last 15 years.
