i dont want to buy stuff to flash it like some kits that people recommend, i just bought a 360 off of ebay but i dont know if its a hitatchi or anything else yet. but if i do get a hitatchi, are they difficult to flash?
i havent flashed one and from all the tuts i have read i will not even try. i do not know how difficult it is but there are added steps and to me doesnt seem worth it. and the newest fw 1.5 hasnt been released for it yet so at least we can say it must be harder to make fw for.

Hitachidvd drives are not difficult to flash. They are compatible with a lot of SATA chipsets. I have only used the VIA 6421 SATA Card so I can't give you a list of compatible chipsets but I'm sure there is a list out there. You will need to put the Hitachi into "Mode B" to extract and flash the firmware. ROM versions 47-59 can easily be put into Mode B with a connectivity kit(debug mode on connectivity kit). Version 78 & 79 require Slax 2.1. Slax will needed to be burned onto a disc and then you boot your computer to Slax. That will put the 78 & 79 into Mode B. Once the drive is in Mode B, you can run the program called Firmware Toolbox 4.8 and that will allow you to extract and flash the firmware. There is one exception and that is with the ROM version 79. You will need to do some additional steps. It requires a .wav file to be burned to an Audio CD, play the audio file, and then run the 79Unlock.exe program. At that point you can extract and flash the firmware. 79Unlock and Audio CD image can be found here.
