Yes look down through the grills on the top of the box and if you see a square silver heatsink on the CPU its a clone.

Although some earlier genuine models are also been bricked :(

i dont know if they'll take it back because i cut the european plug off it and put a standard one on, i think its genuine, i'm not sure what the heatsink is but there are 3 black chips on the board, i think the heatsink is the largest one, if it isn't a clone, why would it have bricked? would it be the beta software?

The CPU is the big black chip in the middle of the motherboard. If it doesnt have a square metallic plate on it, then it doesnt have a heatsink.

8882 is usually caused by a bad flash or badly formatted HDD or mem stick. The Max232 will sort that. If you see a message come up saying this is an invalid box then the box is about to kill the bootloader.

Luckily this is not the case with your box ;)

so is it only the clone boxes that havethe heatsink, or is mine missing one? i'm thinking of trying to fix it myself instead of sending it back, if it works i'll flash it with different software, i used a brand new usb stick the last time with the beta file on it, so i think the file must be corrupt, i set one up last week using 1.10 with no problems.

Yes its the clones that have the heatsink as the processor is inferior on them and needs it to dissipate the heat.

If you are in Ireland you need to use the latest Beta firmware as 1.10 was not opening all the channels. If you are in the UK stick with 1.07.

i dont know about jtagging but the cable i bought doesn't seem to be the one you need, this looks like the one, but it says it needs soldering, it also comes with the appropriate software, if you cant feed a thread on jtagging starview 4, i would start a new one
