ok, i recently turned on an xbox 360 that previously had the 3RROD. it had been sitting around for a while and i had tried to fix it at one point, but failed to do so. so i decided i might send it to a repair center i found. i tunred it on, and all of a sudden it was working, except that it wouldnt open or close the drive tray and the light in the middle would not stop blinking. i did some research and determined i needed a new dvd drive. i bought a new dvd drive exactly like the one that was in it. its a samsung with ms28 firmware. got the new drive, flashed it with ixtreme 1.51 and the old drives key, put it in my xbox 360, and its still doing the same thing. the drive is brand new so im rulling out that it is at fault here. the sata and power cables are good (tested them on another machine), the flash was good(did it again just in case). everything i have read here and everywhere else states that it must be the dvd drive.

I honeslty dont think that the dvd drive is the problem in my case. something must be wrong with the xbox 360. somehow its not reading that the dvd drive is present, or it cant send a signal to the dvd drive, or something.

my question is, has anyone had this problem, found out it wasnt the dvd drive, and managed to fix it? if so how was it done? if the problem is with the connection on the power port or sata port on the motherboard, would it be difficult to replace these parts? Or maybe it would be usefull to try and resolder them to make sure the connections are good?

a bad flash can cause that to happen.

was the first drive flashed. You may have just copied a bad key from one drive to another.

well, i can assure you it wasnt a bad flash, as i have done it four times now with different methods including jungleflasher, iprep, dosflash, and the 360 modification disc. none of them made a difference. the original drive was not flashed and i read it four times to ensure the drive key was correct. thasnk you for the suggestions though.

I once had a bad dvd drive power cable that was giving me the blinking green light. I ordered a new one from llamma which solved the problem, that is probably to easy of a fix though.. Could be that the drive is stuck in debug mode, or Mode B?? Or maybe the keys didn't match for some reason?

well Sammies don't have a mode-b. but if you mean vendor mode simply turning power off should take it out. Also I believe the cables have already been confirmed to be ok. It may be another strange effect of the same problem as the RROD.

if they drive wouldnt eject or anything and just flashed green, it was dead. how did you manage to get the key from a dead drive? swapping boards was the best idea. now try swapping pcb boards and see if it works.

thank you all for the further suggestions. my cables are indeed confirmed woking in another system. and sammy indeed do not have a mode b. the vendor mode is gone once its turned off, not to mention i used jungleflasher to make sure it was back into its original mode. as far reading the original firmware, all i did was hook it up and do it. i figured maybe the motor was bad, or the laser was bad, or something else. i could be wrong about this, but if the drive wont open or close, does that mean the firmware couldnt be retrieved. it seemed to work fine for me, and all four trys gave me the same drive key and firmware file, and the key was very much unigue. unfortunately i have also tried just swapping the pcb boards and again had no luck. im starting to think the problem lies i the motherboard, and its ability to commicate with the dvd power supply adapter/sata communication port. but too my knowledge, i would expect a motherboard error of any sor to give a hardware failure error and an RROD. any other suggestions that i may have overlooed? thanks again for all the feedback.

also, for the sake of more information, does anyone know of a way to retrieve error reporting from the xbox 360's internal memory. maybe a detailed error report that may show some clue to whats going on.

not sure about the internal memory but as far as expecting a RROD sometime you can get the gpu disconnected and it wont give a RROD just show no picture so maybe this is along those same lines. if this is the case and you have already done the xclamp fix try adjusting screw tightness.

Just a though, if its not opening or closing, could that not be due to a power issue? I thought you didnt have to have the SATA cable connected to eject the drive

correct the actual eject command is carried through the power cable.

Are you able to use a connectivity kit to power the DVD drive from your PC's Molex connection, keep the SATA connected to the XBOX and then try it?

this is indeed correct. and the cable i have is working fine, and the drive ejects when connected to my pc via my xtractor 360. i must conclude that issue lies in the power adapter on the 360's motherboard. possibly a bad pin, or a bad solder joint on the adapter. i didnt realize that hardware failures could occur and not give you an RROD. disapointing news actually as that means it is most likely occuring somewhere on the motherboard. i will look into the power adapter on the motherboard and see what i can find.

an interesting thought. i hadnt thought to try that. if doing this would allow me to play games on it, and stop giving me the flashing light, then i could narrow a little. thank you for the suggestion.

I would look into some stuff before I did that if I were you. I've heard that disconnecting the power and turning on the Xbox is a sure way to get you banned from Live.

I'm not positive that such is the case, but it sure as hell isn't a good idea to blindly walk into that. Do some research first unless you're not an avid Live user.

I hope not as I left it unplugged by accident a couple of times when I was flashing my xbox.

If there's nothing else that you can think of, I would go for it as a banned xbox is better than a doesn't work at all.
