Hey guys,

I've been away from the scene for awhile. My wii and wiikey are updated to be able to play Super Mario Galaxy and Mario Kart Wii. I can't tell you my exact firmware as of now because I don't have my Wii with me currently, but I do know it is updated to whatever is needed to play both of the aforementioned games.

I guess my question is, is it safe to upgrade the Wii to current firmware? Will back ups still work? Also, is rawdump the same or has it been upgraded to a newer/better version? Thanks for any answers guys.

As for raw dump I am not certain, but currently it is not safe to update to the current firmware because they can detect modchips, but some mod chips are implementing a "stealth mode" you have to check your mod chips manufacturer for this info.

What? No no NO! I dont know where you heard this but you're completely WRONG!

No update to date has effected any modchips. Even the very oldest, first generation of chips will still work even on the newest firmwares. Some homebrew was blocked by new firmwares, but that can be pretty easily fixed.

And no, rawdump has not been upgraded in quite some time, but there are other methods of dumping games now. Such as friidump and the wifi method.

Sorry need to jump in here as both wrong, updates did affect modchips such as the winja ect that wont play new games as is detected after updates same with wiikey v1 but when latest firmware installed problem fixed 1.9x is latest for wiikey v1.
ive fitted 100s of these and rember the first time it happened black screen with message illeagle hardwear detected and bricked console but simply switched off and on from mains and was okay then updated chip firmware and no more black screen with error message.
the winja which is not updatable was screwed and i pulled out for guy and fitted wiikey.
as of right now you can update your official wii firmware no worrys and should you have any issues with future updates then you will need to update your chip firmware.
so both right and wrong....updates have affected some chips in past but 99% put right with updates ones that were not were not quality anyways,,, best alternative to wiikey v1 is the wasp easy fit no issues what so ever been using more and more lately and no mario kart or super smash issues

@DOUBLE_DD

Sorry, nope. You're wrong too. The 001 error was NOT an update or a firmware issue, it was a diskcheck built into some games. If you use trucha signer to remove the diskcheck or gecko to skip the check your backups will still work perfectly with a wiija or a wiikey on an old firmware.
