Ok I will stand up and raise my hand...first time poster here and quite new to the DVD burning Scene Just call me greenie :)

I had a copy of dvdxcopy platinum given to me which I have found to be to complicated so I just use the simple/express mode. I find it rather satisfactory since it is a basic point and click program sorta dummy proof and it produces nice lookin DVD Back-up's at least I think they are I am not experienced enough to be sure and I haven't created what you would call a "coaster" yet with that program.

I am lookin to dabble with other programs to compare image quality and after sifting through lots and lots of posts DVD Shrink seems to be an overwhelming choice. However as with any hobbie I have found that materials can be pretty pricey so I dont want to have too many errors.

I downloaded the DVD Shrink, and went through the step by step guide. But I am skeptical about chosing what to cut out. Selecting the language was an obvious choice but how do you know which programs are directed at extra stuff such as trailers and commentaries. Any help comments/links would be greatly appreciated! Heck you can even PM me if you like.

I advise not using anything other than DVD Shrink/Nero setup b/c I have had a low success rate with other programs. If you only want to keep certain things like trailers and extras, you should enable the preview on DVD Shrink and see what exactly you want and you can choose to re-author the DVD with only the material you want. What I usually do is remove the additional languages and compress all of the other content except for the actual movie. You want to get the movie around a 60% compression or better; for my needs, this is satisfactory and hardly noticeable. Hope this helps.

Oh I dont want to keep them I would like to cut them out however I am not sure what files belong to what.

Like for example, If I choose to cut out a file that says AC3 2-ch english. Will my son still be able to watch it on his non stereo television or visa versa I chose to select AC3 5.1-ch english will I be unable to get stereo surround on my home theater system. Are subtitles always in the subpicture menu on the right hand side of the screen?

Also if in the DVD Structure I chose to select everything in the "extras" and Unreferenced Material" tab to be cut out, will the movie still run properly.

thanks,

Michelle

I'm going to check on the Audio soon b/c I have been curious about this as well. I am pretty sure if you only keep the 5.1 it will work in a stereo TV w/o receiver, I'll get back to you on this. If you only want the actual movie and re-author so only the movie is backed up, this will not cause any problems and the movie will play fine (the movie will start to play immediately if you don't have any menu).

Re-author sounds a bit scary to me *lol* I don't mind if just the movie is on since I basically just fast-forward through all that stuff anyhow. Well off I go!
I'll return with my results =P

Thanks for your help mastaprk!!

Bylahi34,

First use RW media to experiment with.

Second I like to keep AC 2 2ch and 5.1 - what you want to lose is the Director's comments, Outer Mongolian or Eastern Himalayan Yak language. THEN you want to use re-Author, drag title 1 over (under main movie (that usual movie (you can always check it in the preview window :0

While you're in re-Author - lose the menus (they don't work anyway) and lose all the trailers and search around a bit and lose any warnings you might find - You?ll get good in no time :D)
