avi to divx anyw way other than vdub?

I'm sick of wasting my time on Virtual Dub (and virtual dub mod), are there any apps out there that will convert avi to divx AND ACTUALLY DO IT, unlike vdub and vdub mod which just come up with one excuse after another to not do anything.
By the way my video files play perfectly, and it's a fresh clean running pc. The problems are entirely virtual dub's.
Don't bother pushing virtual dub on me further than the threads on here already have. I've read and watched every tutorial and how-to thread, and in two weeks have not gotten episode one of The Office converted yet. Don't push vdub. Just suggest something else if you know of anything. Thanks.

No sure what you are asking, as .avi is only a container not a format, for the files which may already be divx or xvid.
Edit: Drag your .avi file into GSpot to find out what codec they are encoded to.

I am curious myself as to what the need of the OP is. Unless your AVIs were made by encoding to a H/x.264( I do that with FairUse Wizard), the most common ones(~99% I would say) are encoded with Xvid/Divx( pretty close to same thing, just spelled backwards).

Actually I'd say 99% are Xvids. I rarely encounter a Divx.

You are probably correct. Me, not being "really" pedantic, I just included both of them, Xvid/Divx, in that 99%, with Xvid mentioned first. I should've clarified that 98% of the 99% are probably Xvid indeed, not that it would make a difference:)!

use the free avidemux, that's what I use to convert avi's. Use the mpeg4 asp codec for xvid, and use the mpeg4 avc codec for h264 (which is similar to the codec divx uses and produces the same quality).
avidemux is quick and easy to use, it produces good results for me.
If you want the actual divx encoder codec, it has to be already installed on your computer from a program that you purchased. A program that is very good at converting avi to divx is dr.divx 2.0 (it's free) but you need to supply the divx encoder codec.
From using divx and h264, I couldn't tell a difference in quality between the two encoders. I prefer the h264 encoder because it's free.

Thanks for all the replies.
I was trying to encode Xvid avis to Divx for my dvd player, which will play divx files.
I had a season of the Office I wanted to jam onto one dvd, and 3/4 of the season converted just fine with Vdub, but the other 1/4 would not convert, either with vdub, vdub mod, or divx converter. The files would play just fine on my pc, but not convert. No matter whether I used vdub, vdub mod, or divx converter, it was always the same 1/4 of the episodes that would not convert.
In the end, Dr. Divx did the job with no error messages or freezeups.

google avic fourcc changer you can change the code on the bottom to DIVX the file will then play on standalone player no converting needed

You must have an older player. I have a Pioneer bought last year, so far it played every Xvid with no problems.I wonder what your player does not like about Xvid- (I know some players choke on packed bitstream, or QPel/GMC...)
Have you tried an firmware update(if possible) for your player? If the case were the packed bitstream, then you could use Avidemux or MPEG4Modifier to unpack it without re-encoding(which basically means an entire movie is done in less than 5 minutes).
