As long as you running your back-ups through ABGX and you set it up as per the tutorial, this this will set your layer break for you. Its contained in the .dvd file. If you open the .dvd file with notepad you will see it
Also, not setting the layer break will not stop the burn, it will just not read in the XBOX so I doubt this is your issue.

Maybe the issue, try using DVD +R DL Virtabims, there the best ones. Failing that, try get some with a Ritek Dye.

I'm going to try manually inputting the layerbreak, but can't change booktype (does that matter)?
Should matter, i got hung up on all this when I did my first burn. If it was a book type error it would not burn. I would suggest using diff media. What number was in the .dvd file when you opened it with notepad.

That is the correct layerbreak for a 360 game

Is there another software o can use to burn?
I couldnt on mine. I belive there are others (eg. cloneCD) there are guides but i would highly recommend not getting side-tracked with book type and sticking with ImgBurn.
As i said before the I/O error you are getting is not related to book type issues as it would burn the DVD anyway and just not play on your 360.
