Hi there,

I'm experiencing problems connection to xbox live, and have exhausted all the trouble-shooting steps that the console suggests, to the best of my (admittidly pretty flimsy) abilities.

Description of Problem
The problem, according to the connection tester, is that my xbox isn't obtaining an IP address from my modem/router. Sometimes it'll work, but very rarely. Occasionaly when it can connect, I'm unable to join parties or games, but I can send messages to friends and see what they're doing.

Set-up Description
I'm using a Belkin N Wireless Modem/Router (Hardware: F5D8633-4 v1 (01), firmware version 1.00.01 (Aug 2 2007 16:18:51)) and an Xbox wireless receiver. My wireless mode is 802.11g. Network type is listed as Infastructure (Channel 6). I run my PC (XP) off the same wireless network with no difficulties. At the moment I don't have anything else working off my network, but in the past have had a laptop and an i pod working successfully.

Measures Taken
Yesterday I switched off my router for 30 minutes or so and afterwards found myself able to play perfectly for about 5 hours. Other than that I've attempted to follow the troubleshooting steps on the connection tested, and I think I was successful with the possible exeception of assigning a static IP adress, which I found confusing.
I should point out that it'd be pretty inconvienient to connect my xbox directly so I'd rather avoid it.

So I'd be very grateful for any help or suggestions people can offer, I'm aware there's a lot of posts like this already but the solution seems to be quite depentent on an individual set-up. If there's any info I've left out, please just say and I'll do my best to find it

Thanks in advance,
Dan

when in doubt, reboot. not just the router but the cable modem also. Power up the modem first, then router, then xbox 360. Power on your laptop and make for certain you can wirelessly connect to the internet. once a good connection is proven with the laptop go to speedtest.net and check your connection speed. if that page wont' load or hangs during the test you have a very bad connection and xboxlive will never work. if you pc passes that test post the results here and then go to the xbox and check connection. make sure xbox is set to "automatic"... if all this fails we need to address your router, check a few things, and maybe set a static ip on the xbox. goodluck

I ran the speedtest:

I normally play pc games online, and when xbox live works I don't experience lag so my connection speed should be ok.

I think you're really onto something with the rebooting though, if I leave everything off for 30 minutes or so, then connect my pc, then the xbox, live seems to work fine for a while.

Do you think there's any way I can make it so I don't have to reboot my set-up everytime I want to play online though? It's fantastic to have it working but it's kind of frustrating to have to do all the time and doubly annoying when it fails

Thanks again

you do infact have a cable modem and are not picking up a neighbors signal right? If you are picking up a neighbors signal it is probally failing intermittently... if the connection IS YOURS then we need to log on to your router. Do you know the IP of your router? The default ones are listed at the manufacturer websights, usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1, and so forth. Once connected to your router see if there is a limit on the amount of IP's it can issue. There shouldn't be but there is usually an option for that. What I am getting at is if your laptop is on and your connection is unsecured then there may be several devices actually connected to your network and this exceeds the maximum number set by your router, leaving your xbox in the dark. Set the max at or more than the most number of devices you expect to be connected. Then secure your network so you don't get any wardrivers on there. Look over all the settings in the router and post anything you don't understand. In the end we might set a static IP on your xbox and DMZ it in the router and see if things improve. Oh yeah while your in the router check for firmware upgrades. The very last thing that could be hosing you up ( with exception of a hardware issue) is a setting in your cable modem about "lease term". If the cable modem is leasing your router a single IP for x amount of time then releasing it and assigning a new one it might be playing games with your router ability to issue "new" ip's. Firmware upgrade should solve that. YOUR VERY LAST RESORT is to try the latest "Power Line Adapters". The Gen II PLA's work great when wireless is spotty. Goodluck

( not to kick ya' when ya' down but those speed test results are on the lower end of things, better than 3G but not really close to what's available now, I am suprised your upload speed doesn't hurt you when playing on live, unless its a lag you don't see but on your oponents screen you are jumping all over)

@DementedB

What security protocol do you use to connect the wireless to the router? If you use WEP then try using WAP as the security protocol if your router supports it. I have noticed when using WEP (for Nintendo DS) sometimes my devices will stop connecting and I have to reboot router to get them to connect again. So I don't go on-line with DS anymore and have set the security protocol back to WAP.

As well my Xbox 360 had connection issues. Sometimes it would connect to live but it would not join any party. So I did the below steps and since then I have never had a connection problem.

Set up a static IP and then port forward ports 53/80/88/3074 (both TCP/UDP protocol).

First thing you need to do is set up a static IP for your Xbox 360. I would assume the IP settings would be in the same place for Wired and Wireless but I do not have a wireless adapter. So I don't know 100% if the IP settings are located in the same place for a Wired connection as they are for wireless.

Go to system settings> network settings> configure network> IP settings.

Here we will select Manual to put in a static IP. So select Manual and then put the below in (by default your router IP should be 192.168.2.1 so this is the information I am going with)...

IP Address: 192.168.2.5
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.2.1

After you have set these settings select DONE at the bottom of the screen.

Now we need to set up the DNS.

Go to system settings> network settings> configure network> DNS settings> Manual

Set the Primary DNS to 192.168.2.1

Do not set anything to Secondary DNS

At the bottom of the screen select DONE.

You are now done configuring the Xbox 360 with a static IP address.

Now it is time to forward the proper ports to the Xbox 360.

Go HERE and follow this port forward guide to port forward ports 53/80/88/3074 to your Xbox 360. At the beginning of the guide you need to type 5 when it ask what IP will you be forwarding to.

The guide only tells you to forward 88/3074 so don't forget to do 53/80. Also make sure you set up each port twice 1 for TCP and 1 for UDP (unless it has a selection to do both at the same time).

After you have forwarded all the ports you are done.

You should also be able to assign the 192.168.2.5 to the Xbox 360 MAC Address so the router always assigns that IP to the Xbox 360.

Alright so. First things first, I do have my own modem and am not hijacking anyone else's signal. It's secured and, with the exception of my own pc, which also connects wirelessly, it's not being used by anything else at this point in time.

I haven't been able to check the setting on my router directly, but its DHCP server help says it can assign ip adresses to up to 99 computers.

Firmware was something I hadn't considered, but apparently I'm using the latest version already. My router also says it has UPnP enabled.

I don't know anything about power line adaptors, but as I said my pc is connected wirelessly with no problems so I don't think that's the problem. Though it may be worth pointing out that I was suffering constant service interuptions until I changed my frequency from 802.11g & 802.11b to 802.11g only.

Thanks for all the helpful suggestions

Thanks for the tip larrylje, I'll give it a shot now and let you know how it goes. I think those adresses should be ok, my xbox certainly connected on that ip yesterday, today it was a different one, but I guess that's what they mean by dynamic ;) .

the help file says it supports up to 99 devices? you must check to see if that is selected.

if so you are ready to "Port Forward" like larry said or DMZ a static IP... give it shot.

Like I said if you permanently assign 192.168.2.5 to the MAC address of the Xbox 360 in the router settings then the router will only assign that IP address to the Xbox 360. Make sure you port forward the above ports to that IP adress.

Also if you ever want to stream anything from your PC to xbox 360 you might need to set up a static IP on your PC.

PC Static IP:

IP: 192.168.2.2
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.2.1

DNS: 192.168.2.1

I bet it's the same problem I had with my Belkin Router and more than one wireless signal. I had AES encryption with WAP2 security. Laptop would connect, xbox wouldn't. I changed the encryption to TKIP and now everything works.

Sorry for the delay in getting back with news, I'm writing a massive essay atm, so can only dedicate so much time to repairing live.

Anyway I changed my encryption as suggested and that seems to be preventing the problem, at least to an extent; a little over half the time I turn my machine on, it will successfully connect to live . If it doesn't I switch it off and on again and it tends to work

I only really have one friend on live, so it's difficult to test whether I'm able to join games and parties. But I'm certainly able to download updates and see friends. When my friend gets online I'll check if we're able to play together and see about setting up that static IP if I can't.

Incidently, my xbox live tag is hardimad if anyone wants to play together sometime.

once again, thanks for all the help everyone!

Hmmm, crossing finger wasn't enough, it broke down again. I tried setting up the static IP as larrylje suggested, using that helpful portforwarding guide posted.

I wasn't sure what to set "private IP adress" as so I just set it to the static IP for the xbox. Everything else is as advised but it still didn't work.

I'm not sure if I did anything wrong but I don't think so. I'm going to go back and double check everything is being assigned an IP adress

Also make sure uPNP is enabled on the router. Then you don't have to worry about the ports. I leave mine on dynamic (not static) and everyting works fine with TKIP encryption & WPA2 security.

Also try updating your routers FW. I serached for the FD58633-4 and it doesn't exist. Here's a link to what I think you meant to type (FD58233-4)

http://www.belkin.com/support/article/?l...d=9101&scid=221

If that's the right router, that's the exact same one I have.

Thanks, UPnP is turned on, it's a relief if I don't have to bother with port forwarding, I don't like meddling with things I don't understand :)

I say "check for firmware updates" on my router and it says no new updates available

It actually started working again after my last post and I've been playing resident evil since. I really don't understand it.

I just keep trying to connect and eventually it works, makes no sense to me but at least I can kind of play... it's all very mysterious though

That check for router firmware update is busted. Go to www.belkin.com and find your specific model and download the FW. I use the newest and it works.

I've got my firmware updated now to the newest one available: 1.01.06 which is dated 1/06/09.

Still not able to connect with any regularity however, worked for about 30 minutes yesterday and then stopped again

How strong is the wireless signal?

I know you don't want to hook it up wired but maybe do it just long eneough to see if you have connection problems that way.

4 bars or so, I run a wirelessly connected pc out of the same room.

Some kind of interference there would make a lot of sense though. I had problems with my pc for ages until I changed my router's setting to "protected" or something but now I don't get any interruptions on the pc.

Could it be possible that the same thing is hitting my 360 and that that thing would permit my comp to connect normally at the same time?
