I have several movies that have two parts on seperate disc. I have copied both disc to may hard drive and want to combine the two dics to mahe one using ifoedit. Help

Hi....i'm having the same problem with Gangs of New York which is on two DVDs. i used DVDShrink on each part and put Part I and Part II into two separate folders.. Then i was told by someone to take the VOBs from PartII folder....since the numbering and copy them to the folder with Part I. Now i don't know how to use IFOEdit so that all the VOBs can be played from one folder.....Any luck??.......advise.......tom

Do you two really have to use IFOEdit? There are much easier ways to combine titles onto one disc.
About the easiest way is to make a compilation of the parts using Shrink. Once assembled, you just burn the thing.
Use Shrink in the re-author mode and using the browser, find the VIDEO_TS folder for the 1st part and select it.
Next, drag the title you want into the compilation window on the left. Repeat this process with the next part you want.
For a big movie like GONY just add the main titles only, untick all the sub-pictures and select the 5.1 Audio. Use the deep analysis feature. Back it up and....
Its ready to burn!

Hi Frank....Tom here...i tried but apparently i'm doing something wrong with the compilation of the two parts(GONY)in DVD Shrink....Can you please guide me through it??? Many thanks from an old man (age 72) but still wanting to learn new things....tom

Hi Tom,
I'll give you a step by step procedure here, just make sure to let me know if you have a problem with any of the steps.
First, delete previous attempts if you files left on your hard drive.
The two programs we are going to use are DVD Shrink 3.1.7.6 and DVD Decrypter 3.2.1.0 Check and see if you have both of these program versions. Both are free.
The basic procedure will be to create two folders on your hard drive, disc 1 & disc 2, compile them using Shrink and then burning the compilation.
Shrink will utilize Decrypter's burn feature to do this. You will not have to open Decrypter, just make sure it is installed on your computer.
I'm assuming you have room on your hard drive for 3 4.36 GB folders. Make a folder on your hard drive called "movies". (Something like C:\ Movies)
Lets start!
Open Shrink 3.1.7.6
Click on Edit then Preferences and check the set up.
Preferences Tab:
Automatically open VIDEO_TS folders
Preview Tab:
Stereo
System Default Renderer
Output Tab:
First 4 boxes ticked
Stream Selection Tab:
Audio language and coding type:
All Languages AC3 or LCPM
Sub-picture language:
All Languages
File I/O Tab:
tick Enable Overlapped I/O
tick Check RPC 2 Drive Region Code
untick Enable Burning with Nero
Put disc 1 of the movie in your reader, select "Open Disc", toggle the menu to select your drive and select OK. Shrink will now analyze it.
If you have done this before, Shrink will use the results from the previous attempt.
Once this is completed, you will see on the left screen the DVD structure and on the right your compression settings for the Video, Audio and subpicture tick boxes.
At the top of the Shrink window, click on the Re-author tool bar button. A new screen appears with all the titles in the right window. Note at the top of the right window the two tabs, Compression settings and DVD Browser.
Look at all the titles, you are after the Main Movie. Drag it over into the left DVD Compilation window.
If there is two main movie titles that usually means one is wide screen and one is full screen.
Check by using the preview feature:
Highlite the title you want to look at by clicking on it. Right click on the preview window and select play. Notice in the menu there is also full screen and audio choices.
Now is a good time to see what they do.
Use the full screen option and then right click anywhere in the preview window. You can go back to the small window by unchecking the full screen option. Use the audio option to listen to the different audio tracks available. Take note of the one you want!
Once you have selected the main movie title and know what audio stream you want, go to the window on the right and click on the compression settings tab. Untick every box except the one with your chosen audio track. This includes unchecking all the subpicture boxes as well.
The audio stream I keep is usually the AC3 5.1, just make sure you listen to it using the preview window.
You can play with the start/end function (the arrows located at the upper right of the left screen) and trim the beginning if you want. Just don't trim the end of disc 1 or you will be missing part of your movie!
Lets back this thing up!
Select Backup! from the tool bar, your Backup DVD window opens with a bunch of tabs:
Target Device:
Select Target Device:
Hard Disk Folder
Select Target Folder for DVD Output Files:
Use the browse button and browse for your "Movies" folder, click on it and then click on the "make a new folder" button. Rename this folder "Gangs of NY Disc 1" and select OK.
We are still under the Target device tab so check the "create AUDIO and VIDEO_TS sub folders" box.
Next tab, DVD region:
check the make region free box
Backup Options:
Check the "Perform Deep Analysis" box this will take longer but improve quality.
Uncheck "Backup in Low Priority"
leave the rest as is.
Burn Settings:
Should have the name of your movie in the Volume Label box.
Now that thats done, select OK and Shrink will encode your movie to the selected location.
Once that is done, do the same thing with the second disc.
Make sure you select the main movie title with the same screen format. Select the same audio stream as well. Use the Start/End Feature to trim the end credits if you like, I would. When you select the target folder, make a second folder called gangs of NY Disc 2.
When this is completed you will have both discs in folders, ready for compilation and burning.

Hi Tom,
Lets make a compilation and burn it!
Open Shrink (If you did not close it after the first steps, close it and re-open!)
Lets go through the Edit> Preferences tabs again.
Preferences:
Target DVD size:
DVD-5
Check Automatically open VIDEO_TS subfolders.
The other two should be unchecked.
Preview:
As is.
Output Files:
1st four boxes checked.
Stream selections:
As is.
File I/O:
Check Enable overlapped I/O
Leave the rest unchecked.
Select OK for the Preferences.
Select Open Files from the tool bar, the browse for folder window opens. Use this to find your first folder, "Gangs of NY disc 1". Click on the folder and select OK. Disc 1 is now opened in Shrink's Full Disc window.
Select Re-author from the tool bar.
You should see just the main title on the right, drag it into the window on the left.
Locate the drop down menu on the right, its just below the compression settings and DVD Browser tabs, and click on the arrow box to open it. Use this to find the second disc files. Click on the folder, Gangs of NY disc 2 and again, the title will appear in the screen on the right. drag it into the window on the left.
It should look like this:
Title 1
Title 1 (2)
Thats the compilation!
Select Backup! from the tool bar.
The backup DVD window opens. We are going to burn with DVD Decrypter so change the Select Target Device to:
ISO Disc Image
Shrink should list a default location in the "select target image file" but you can make your own location if you like. Take note of the available space to insure that Shrink has enough space to work with.
Make sure to check the launch DVD Decrypter to burn the output stage box!
Under backup options tab, check the "deep analysis" box. This is optional, the feature allows Shrink to more accurately determine the required compression so less will be used, giving you better quality. It just takes longer.
Put your blank DVD into your burner and select OK at the bottom of the Backup DVD window. DVD Shrink and Decrypter will do the rest.
Shrink will encode both halves of the movie, perform the deep analysis, then open Decrypter and burn the disc.
If I left something out or have a setting wrong let me know!!!

Yes Tom, Get Decrypter!!!!
A couple of things...
For the procedure I described:
Shrink will do the decrypting and compressing, the only thing Decrypter is used for in this case is to burn the disc.
Many folks assume that Shrink cannot decrypt and feel a need to use Decrypter or SmartRipper, etc before using Shrink. Only in rare instances when Shrink has trouble with the encryption are these programs needed when just making DVD-9 back-ups.

You have been so generous in sharing your unbelieveable knowledge with me....it certainly is very much appreciated....I'll let you know how it goes. I already download the latest DVD Shrink (3.1) and it's so be better than the old one which i had (v2.3). Thank you for that too..
Now, in your last email, you mentioned that"the only thing Decrypter is used for in this case is to burn the disc." So if i use other programs to burn DVDs (e.g. TMPGEnc DVD Authoring), explain why i should download Decrypter? Thanks again......Tom

Hi again Tom,
There are all kinds of programs out there to rip, burn and/or re-author DVDs. It's very common to combine the functions or use the features of various individual programs to accomplish a specific goal.
A good example is the process I described earlier. Using Shrink to decrypt, compress and compile with Decrypter's burn feature we can end up with a DVD compilation on a disc.
Generally three things have to happen to get a DVD-9 on to a blank disc,
1. Decryption, removing the copy protection.
2. Compression, so it will fit on one blank disc.
3. Writing the files to a blank disc in a form that is DVD-Video compliant and will play in most players.
A few programs do all three most just do one or two.
DVD Decrypter can do #1 and #3. We used its #3 feature.
TMPGEnc DVD author fits in another category, sort of. It will burn a DVD but it's primary function is to author.
Heres a few more :D
Shrink does #1 and #2.
Nero Burning ROM does #3
Nero Recode 2 does #2 and #3.
AnyDVD sits in the background and does #1
DVD43 also sits in the background and does #1
CloneDVD does #2 and#3
DVDFab does #2 and #3.
The older versions of 321 studio Xcopy programs could do all three, the new versions have had the rip function removed.
There are programs that do very specific functions like Titleset Blanker, IFOEedit, Menuedit etc.
There are very expensive (and difficult) authoring programs like Adobe Encore DVD, Sonic Scenarist, Sonic Reel DVD and DV Storm.
To answer your question though, TMPGEnc DVD author can't decrypt so Decrypter is used. The problem I have with TDA is that it can't handle a lot of stuff that I want to keep, 5.1 sound for example. It can't handle different aspect ratios in the same project so if you have a widescreen movie with full screen extras it won't work. Its kinda buggy and IMHO not really suited for backing up DVDs. I'd try other methods to keep or have working menus.
You want to keep DVD Decrypter for the rare occasion Shrink has problems with a movie. It works great for ripping and burning DVD-5s. I also use it when I want the whole uncompressed movie on my hard drive for use at a later date.

Frank....as i was reading your wonderful notes on DVD Shrink, you mentioned at one point something about Backup Options Tab:
"Check the "Perform Deep Analysis" box this will take longer but improve quality.Uncheck "Backup in Low Priority" leave the rest as is." However, with my Shrink program the "Perform Deep Analysis" box is gray and unchecked and can not be changed.. Also there is no "Backup in Low Priority" box....Please advise...Tom

Thanks...why are you not in the category "Senior"..you have so much knowledge...it nice being young and sharp too. My oldest grandson( one of 16) is a PHd in system analysis..and works for Okidata in N.J...
I already have Part I and Part II of GONY on my hard drive using DVD Shrink. I installed DVD Decrypter..and now I'm getting ready to burn my DVD.. I'll keep you informed...also your last message was sent by you at about 5:30pm...but I got it just now (7:30pm new york time).....thanks.......Tom

After about 2 hours at the end...a new folder was formed called "VOLUME_1.ISO" which has all the files needed to burn the DVD.. do i now use any burn program such as Nero???

Hi Tom,
If you had Decrypter installed it should have burned it automatically.
I am assuming you have it installed but did not check the box.

Oh well, just launch Decrypter, go to the "mode" menu and select ISO-> ISO W.
Browse for your ISO folder and select it. Click on the Decrypter burn icon (its the picture of the disc and burner).
Just make sure you have your blank disc in your burner.
If things are set correctly, DVD Decrypter will burn your ISO image and you will have a working copy of gony on one disc.

Thanks Frank.....i found where i should have checked "Launch DVD Decrypter to burn". Anyway, i started DVD Decrypter manually and did my burn..and all is just great and so fast....thanks. However, to the right of the green arrow which starts the burn, there's a "Settings" area that has "Write speed". Should that be activated by selecting a speed or just leave it blank??? For this GONY burn i left it blank and it looks fine but i thought i would ask you.
The good thing about the new DVD Shrink is you can go directly to burn without having to be at the computer..that's great...what i don't like is:
1. When i do my backups i can get as many as 3 separate movies on one DVD (and with my Menus in them)and of fairly good quality. The maximum (I think) with this method is two parts of one movie or 2 movies and no menus..only the chapters that were in the original movie(in other words the "Menu" button for my TV top DVD Player doesn't work.
2. Of course my method (really not mine) is more complex.The following is done for each movie (or parts) that you eventually will carry to TDA program and then burn with TDA:
A. I USE SmartRipper for each movie (or part)
B.Next i use DVD2AVI which gives me D2V & AC3 files.
C. Next I use VFAPIConvEN.exe.This makes a fake AVI .
D.Now use Mainconcept which converts AVI to MPV.
E. Now use DoPullDown which adds 3:2 Pulldown flags.
This converts MPV to m2v file.
F.Now load the m2v and AC3(audio)into TDA and burn..
Your advice is certainly always appreciated. My knowledge(and probably my understanding) is not as thorough as yours.
So now the hot question.....Do you have a method to backup more than 2 movies (with menus)on a DVD that's simpler??

Hi Tom,
I know that Scubapete uses DVD2One in the join mode to put three or more movies on a disc, I never put more than one.
I did a search on the programs you are using. It just seems like a lot of work, although I think you know more about this business than you are letting on!
Your way uses a different method to reduce the size of the movies which is probably better than some of these one or two program methods are. If quality is important, continue doing it your way.
I suggest that you look at the results an easier method might provide, and if it's acceptable, use it.
Verbal and Minion are the experts when it comes to using the method you use. I don't like to spend more than an hour on a DVD. :D I do find the process very interesting though!

Hi there,
I was reading the various posts about joining DVDs and I have a similar problem. I'm trying to join two full DVDs onto one Disk.
Attempts using both DVD Shrink and DVD2One have failed. DVD Shrink refuses to see the main title in re-author mode of both disks. I get the following error: "DVD Shrink encountered an error and can not continue. Invalid data in file M:\ROTK1\VIDEO_TS\VTS_01_1.VOB." The same happens with the disk 2.
I get a bit further with DVD2One join mode, except it doesn't register the whole of the second dvd. You join it, and it's not the whole of the second disk anyway, and the picture occasionally blips. This is Return of the King which I downloaded. Playing the film on normal playback is perfect, but I have a worrying feeling that only Ifo edit will only rectify the problem. I know nothing about it. But I think DVD2One and DVDshrink are confused about the VOB file nos being the same on both discs. Is this what the problem could be?
If so, is there a straight forward guide in IFO editwhich can help me re-author these two DVD disks into one perfectly playable DVD.

Yes, I'm running the latest version of everything.
I've decided to give up on this one. I have the full film which is perfect except that it spans over two disks. I just wanted one seamless film. Maybe I shouldn't moan, at least the quality isn't compromised.
