I am confused about the real DVD5 capacity.
Is it 4.7gb, or 4.38gb of actual data storage?

Using BurnAware, set to UDF, I got 4,366mb total
size on disk; However, it says 117mb free.
huh? Is this a software error?

4.7 - 4.366 = 0.334
But, 4.38 - 4.366 = 0.014
Therefore, either 334mb or 14mb are really left on disk, not 117mb.

Following from Wikipedia ?DVD?

Quote:
As with hard disk drives, in the DVD realm gigabyte and the symbol GB are usually used in the SI sense, i.e. 109 (or 1,000,000,000) bytes. For distinction, gibibyte with symbol GiB is used, i.e. 230 (or 1,073,741,824) bytes. Most computer operating systems display file sizes in gibibytes, mebibytes and kibibytes labeled as gigabyte, megabyte and kilobyte respectively.
Single layer recordable disc capacities are as follows.

DVD-R:
4,707,319,808 bytes /1024 = 4596992 kibibytes
4596992 kibibytes /1024 = 4489.25 mebibytes
4489.25 mibibytes / 1024 = 4.3840 gibibytes

DVD+R:
4,700,372,992 bytes /1024 = 4590208 kibibytes
4590208 kibibytes / 1024 = 4482.625 mebibytes
4482.625 mebibytes / 1024 = 4.3776 gibibytes

So if used DVD+R disc, which is 4483 MB (mibibytes), and wrote 4366 MB, then 117MB remain

(Edit)
Note: In Wikipedia quote, "109" is 10^9 and "230" is 2^30. Simple copy and paste didn't work... sorry.

Your math is all wrong, 4366mb plus 117MB equals 4.38GB.
