your xbox 360 dashboard will format the drive for you under system settings, there is also a command to clear the cache if you look online and google "clear xbox 360 cache" its some kinds of controller button combination.

I think I already told you what to do based on my experience, but If I didn't then this is what I would do:

GHOST the drive with Norton Ghost: then you will have a complete image of the drive the exact way it was

Then format with windows, I thinks its called drive edit, you can access it with the run command or administrative options

At this point you have a couple options and may have to do it twice depending on what works for you:Use "GPARTED" and set up similiar partions as the original drive and copy in the necessary files OR
Just use Xplorer360 with your newly formatted hard drive and get the files ss.bin etc. from the GHOST image.

TO THE CONTRARY of the above, if you are still working with the same 20gig hard drive you and I spoke about in another post then my opinion is "junk it" cause it's failed.

Goodluck.

its started saying that the drive was unformated on the xbox but still would not let me format it and windows does not detect the drive when hooked up to pc.

some sata configs, actually most, are not plug and play. did you boot with the drive connected or try "scan for hardware changes" with device manager?

Is plugged into sata port or are you using usb to sata converter?
