This is Not how you Make a DVD, Nero Does Not create DVD"s it Just Burns them you need to use a DVD authoring Program to Add the Menu"s and Chapters to the Movie and then let it create the File structure Based one your Menu"s and Chapters, and it will output the Mpeg2 File as a Video_TS Folder that containes the Proper File Structure(VOB,IFO,BUP) that you can Burn to DVD useing Nero in DVD Video Mode but usually the DVD authoring Program does that also...
A very Simple DVD authoring Program is called "Tmpgenc DVD author" it will create a Very Basic DVD out of your Mpeg2 file based on the menu"s and Chapter points that you specify in the Program..You can download the 30 day fully working demo at the TMPGEnc web site and there is also probably a link to it in the Afterdawn Software section....Cheers

PS: You can also create an AVI file in TMPGEnc but instead of Pressing start to encode the file to mpeg you go to "File" to "Output To" to "AVI" and then choose your audio and Video compression and a place to save the File and then save it...It is actually quite fast compared to some other Programs....

I was going to ask this question...

I have a Panasonic DMR-E50 standalone DVD recorder and once I've recorded something onto DVD-RAM, and then dropped the programmes onto my home PC, I would like to convert the files into DivX .avi's

The standalone recorder makes a folder on the DVD-RAM disc called:

Dvd_rtav

and inside this folder I get:

Vr_mangr.bup
Vr_mangr.ifo
Vr_movie.vro

Usually I have captured several bits of video onto the one DVD-RAM but I only get the one .vro file

Using TMPGEnc DVD Author I can turn each video file into a .mpg, but I'd like to convert the .mpg's into DivX .avi's so I can reduce the file sizes

What would be the best way of ending up with DivX AVI files ?

Well the VRO Files are Basicly Just Mpeg file so you can probably Just rename the File to .mpg if you want,
You can Load the VRO/Mpeg file into TMPGEnc and encode it to Divx but you Might need to install a Mpeg2 codec that TMPGEnc can use like this one:
http://www.marumo.ne.jp/mpeg2/m2v_vfp-0.6.47.lzh
It also has a Basic Mpeg editor with it...Just make sure that you set up your Frame Rate and Resolution settings the way you want them in TMPGEnc before you output the File to divX and Make sure your Output Frame rate is the same and you input frame rate because TMPGEnc doesn"t convert Frame rates well....Well Good Luck...Cheers
