i had the same problem, it just kept cycling and forcing the update but wouldnt update, i had to send it into microsoft.

You can try this below though.

You can try clearing the cache or formating the drive. You can also try deleting your downloaded content.

i had one of these a while back, it was a xenon. never did fix it. mine kept trying to update then said "shutoff console and attach hardrive", did that a bunch of times. The damn hard drive was already on there. There might be something behind the overheat and reset.... as lots of other elctronics do similar things when a "hard fault" occurs. Some PLC's(program logic controllers) for example if they hard fault will stop the program and prompt the user wether to boot from from ram or flash... flash being saved program.

The xbox's inability to update is most likely a "ram" failure or bad sectors on the nand.

I heard of one guy who fixed the purple screen, I think he posted on teamxecuter . com, but I tried all his suggestions without any luck.

hmm interesting. usually if one of the chips got really hot and became lose it would cause rrod or no video. in this case i think it could be possible that if this happened during an update it could cause th issue we are seeing here instead of RROD. so maybe it was faulty but not to the point o rrod but just enough during the install that it corrupted something.

you didnt have to rent, you could have downladed the update to CDR and applied via the official microsoft xbox webiste. but either way, glad it worked for you. If you are getting disc errors, its either a bad burn, scrached disc, or going bad dvd drive.

oh yea, last resort before replacing the drive would to to clean the dvd drive's lens and to try tweaking the POT on the drive.
