i am new here and i finally registered after reading for a while.
I want to purchase a xbox elite in the next few weeks so i have some questions how to hack it properly.
1) is it right, that there isnt any possibility to play backups from harddrive as it was possible with the old xbox console?
2) if there is the only option to play backups from optical drive - which xbox360 version (pro/arcade/elite) offers the best dvd-drive? Personally i prefer the red limited edition, cause its an elite jasper (too bad there arent any black jaspers out yet!)
3) dont know if anyone knows - developing with the xna-framework on the xbox360 needs gold-membership - is it possible to hack that too?
thats all for now - maybe i come up with additional questions later :-)
your number 3 question is most likely a no. i say that cause XNA would be done via the PC not the 360. Unless you have a devkit 360 which are supposed to be for developers only. There are some out there in the wild but they go for a high price. So that being said your option would be XNA over PC. I have been participating in the XNA beta with MS for about 1 year or so now and i can say it would not be possible to hack anything to give you access to what is reserved for Gold status members. That would be true for XNA or reg content. If a Gold access could be gotten that easily we would all be doing it :)
its a special 360 that typically runs only unsigned code. so it is no good for retail games/backups. as the name implies it is only for developers to use and they dont even get to own it. they pay a liscense and they are given a unit by MS and MS can take it back whenever they want. So when one goes missing it is the devs fault and MS doesnt like that. So they can be hard to find and exspensive.
you can play backups off the hard drive, just not like the original xbox. You need to have the disc in the dvd drive and the game saved to the hard drive. Once the system queries the drive to see what disc is in it the dvd will stop spinning and the game will load from the hdd. This is not a hack, this is something Microsoft included in the NXE.
that means it doesnt care for backups which version i buy, cause they all have the same optical drive? (just want to have that confirmed)
@gold-membership - i dont thought of hacking the membership - i thought of hacking to deploy xna-applications for free on the xbox. Would like to play around with that, but i dont want to buy the gold-membership, cause i dont need it really

There are different makes optical drives however I think Liteon's or Benq's are supplied with new XBOX's
