I got my hands on a $30 off coupon effective in a month (can't use it now) so I think I'll finally get the Xbox 360 then. I'm somewhat of a fan of JRPGs (not a hardcore fan but I've played and beat my fair share of them) so knowing that, would Xbox 360 be a smart choice over PS3? From what I've heard, JRPGs are really struggling to make a mark in this gen compared to western rpgs like Mass Effect, Fallout 3, Oblivion, etc. as they're mostly be released on DS and even on the PS2 still (I own both). Xbox 360 is the king of western rpgs but I hear that even in the JRPG department, M$ has one-upped Sony in this gen.

So would you recommend a 360 for someone who likes JRPGs and which ones do you recommend? (I've heard that Star Ocean: The Last Hope, Tales of Vesperia, Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon, Eternal Sonata, Enchanted Arms and Infinite Undiscovery were good) I'm actually not going to pirate in this gen so I don't want to buy shovelware. Thanks.

the 360 is a very good choice, and all of those games you listed (those that i have played) are great! some are still quite popular! i would stick with the 360 if it was me. but you also might want to look further than the games. i mean ps3 live is free, 360 isnt. things of that nature. so look at the other differences as well.

im going to be honest with you, Im really not a big xbox fan but I call it like i see it.
Ps3 wont be coming out with any jrpg's any time soon. It is possible to expect 1 a year from now, if your going to wait for final fantasy "I highly doubt you'll wait a year" to make its debut!

I have ps3 and the other consoles you have and must say,
go to 360.
Its a hell of a lot more reliable For that genre of games.
Trust me Im gonna make the switch soon because all I do is play jrpgs
there my favorite type of games and if you buy Star Ocean: The Last Hope, Tales of Vesperia, Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon, Eternal Sonata, Enchanted Arms and Infinite Undiscovery, Chances are that by the time you beat half of those games, 6 more would be out.
The Only honorable mention for ps3 is Eternal sonata "which was made for 360 first" and thats it.
Weigh your options! Ps3 is slow right now for rpgs so if that's your sole purpose to go next gen, then go 360. you'll thank me!

Yeah I've thought of the disadvantages of the 360 relative to PS3.

- RRoD (even with Jasper chips). I'm most concerned about this. M$ gives you a 3 year warranty on all 360s for this right? Not that I plan on getting a RRoD. Even if M$ fixes it for free, I'd be pissed if it happened.
- Prone to scratching disks (not sure if that's a problem anymore). Also a big concern and I think this is covered under the small limited warranty, not like the RRoD.
- Xbox Live Gold for $48 CDN every 13 months (on sale price, not regular) vs. free PSN. That's a pretty reasonable deal and it's better than PSN but yeah, not free.
- Not Wifi ready.
- Can't recharge controllers out of the box (I have rechargeable Duracell NiMH AA batteries though so no biggie)

I'm leaning more to 360 for game library and price reasons. $170 Arcade Xbox 360 + 20 GB hard drive that I can probably find cheaply vs. $400 GB 80 GB PS3. I'd have to sign on to Xbox Live Gold for a number of years for things to even out but by then there will be a new gen. There are positives and negatives to both. Though with the library that the 360 has and the high cost of the PS3, I'm slanting towards the 360. The fact that PS3 hasn't capitalized yet on the JRPG market while the 360 has been putting a number of them out (not as great as the PS2 and DS library but still) is making it difficult to change my mind. Sony losing exclusivity over FFXIII in the west is a big blow as well.

360 in good condition will only scratch a disc if you knock the damn console over while the drive is spinning. if your 360 is 3 years old running a burnt up hitachi then placing a stack of books next to it is enough to wobble the disc and cause a scratch.

Alright so I guess I don't have to worry about disc scratching then. RRoD is still the big one I'm concerned with though. I'm pretty sure that I wouldn't overplay the 360 without rest to the point of over-heating but this problem is so common so who knows.

I agree RROD is common but it doesn't happen to everyone. There are some pro-active measures you can take to prevent it. I wouldn't cover my heatsinks with cardboard like some people do but intalling a more efficient fan and removing some metal screening, and adding some heatsinks to the ram and hana will insure success. Just keeping the console in open air will do wonders for cooling. Also MS has improved on cooling with every revision of the console. There is still some launch consoles (2005) that are still running fine. Don't worry about rrod, and NEVER wrap it with a towel!!!!!!!!!

I'm not going to make modifications to the console as I don't want to void the warranty. I suppose I should be fine though if I have open space? Plus I hear that room temperature makes a difference too. My console gaming is done in the basement so that shouldn't be an issue.

Important factors regarding RRoD: Ambient Room Temperature, Room Humidity Index, Smoking? (Increased Dust Factor), GPU/CPU Utilization (How graphically intense, How intricate are the physics, etc.), Ventilation/Exhaust.
My xbox has been running great since i purchased it, rrod'd once so i left it off for a week. Then i took it apart, vaccuumed the dust out and have not had an issue since. I also have not participated in any 96 hour gamathon's since then so that may help...

Zephyr HDMI XBOX 360 + MS 120GB HDD + Benq VAD6038. Running @ 480p until i have time to xclamp/reflow.

Alright I'm also looking around for a 20 GB Hard Drive. I don't need anything more than that. It should be plenty for one or two games installed at a time, game saves, the occasional demo (which I'll delete when I finish anyway), free DLC (I doubt I'll be paying extra unless it's worth my while) and maybe Live Arcade games if I am in the mood. Unfortunately the 20 GB hard drive + 3 months xbox live promotion that M$ had ended in January. So I'll have to get the HDD elsewhere. If I buy it overseas in say Hong Kong or elsewhere outside North America, will the hard drive work in a North American NTSC 360? Thanks.

Just wanted to add about RROD...seriously don't stress about it. I've had mine since oct 07 and never had any issues what so ever. I just keep it vertical, give it plenty of space around it to vent....I'm fine, just use common sense that you would with anything electronic in terms of air flow and you'll be fine. Oh and they aren't kidding about how easy it can scratch....definitely be careful about knocking it or bumping it while the disc is running, one bump and that bad boy can scratch the living hell out of the disc...good luck and enjoy your console when you get it!

the 360 comes standard with a 60 gb HDD now instead of 20 gb for the same price, so just grab that.

I'm not getting a 20 gb premium console (or whatever they call it). I'm getting an Arcade ($170 cdn) + a 20 gb hdd seperately. Anyways, I already ordered the hdd from Hong Kong since M$ is no longer offering the 20 gb refurb + 3 months live gold for $30 promotion. :( I've read on the internet that only the dvd drive is region-locked so. It's going to take awhile to get here (last time it took 20 days from time of ordering to get something from HK) but hopefully it'll arrive a bit before I get the 360 at least. I don't want to hear a jet engine taking off constantly so hopefully installing games on the HD will make the thing quiet and run cooler.

As for the JRPGs, I'm deciding on whether I should go for an out-of-print quality JRPG first. I was originally planning on getting Lost Odyssey first. Apparently it's a more mature game than Blue Dragon and it's reasonably priced for a new copy whereas Star Ocean and Tales of Vesperia are still expensive. However, from my experience, quality out-of-print JRPGs and other Japanese-styled games become expensive quick so I'm tempted to grab Enchanted Arms and Eternal Sonata. The otaku fanbase here seem to drive up the price of these type of games. I found Enchanted Arms still being sold new despite being out-of-print so I may grab that first. The reviews for Enchanted Arms mostly sucked because the reviewers were mostly biased in favor of western rpgs (which are the new craze on consoles) but the Penny Arcade guys raved that it is a great game for traditional JRPG fans and I trust their word on it since they really know that genre.

I might also look into western rpgs but I need something that is more wrpg n00b friendly. Seriously. I beat SW:KOTOR's PC version in both good and evil paths and the Diablo series (doesn't really count) but from experience of PC wrpgs, I either have trouble sitting through a wrpg or the game brutally pwns me. I was getting pwnd in Fallout 2 about a bit more than half-way through the game though I guess I was playing on medium. Maybe I could have beat it on easy. Now I don't know if it's just me being so used to the jrpg style of play but it does seem that jrpgs are easier in general. In general, not always, it's much easier to be trapped in a wrpg (ie. making a poor decision when furthering the plot, building your character wrong and then being permanently screwed or trying to survive a big fight in Fallout 2 without having your AI-minded party members die on you. No phoenix downs or trips to a church to revive). JRPGs are much more linear and forgiving in general.
