Alright so, my xox 360 forked fine yesterday, i was ripping it up on xbox live. about an hour after turned off my 360, we decided we wanted to watch a movie. so i unhhoked it and took it to my living room. When i hooked it up, it booted up fine, but everytime i put the movie in, it would say "open tray". i thought it was the movie, untill i tried my games. non of them work. no matter what i put in there it says "open tray". I have a samsung Dvd Drive. (i guess theres 2 kinds?) but im not sure how to tell what kinda mind is. it also makes a grinding noice and it says that it reading the disk for a good 20-30 seconds before it says "open tray". i have opened it and cleaned the lens and tried everything i could find. The laser works, but i cant tell if its moving over the disk, like scanning it. but i have no idea what else to do.
Am i screwed guys?

No you aren't screwed. Are you using back-up games or originals?

There is a couple of things you can do. I believe with the Samsung there are 2 screws in the drive that you can tighten down to get the laser closer to the disc. Or you can try a POT calibration. By doing a POT calibration you will increase the laser strength and then you should be able to read games.

If those options fails, you will more than likely need to replace the drive which isn't hard either.

here I posted the tut for pot calibration on my rapidshare.

http://rapidshare.com/files/214196955/XB...0_by_Moda_2.pdf

Pot calibration basically turns the resistance down on the laser which increases power to the beam and makes it work better. this is typically a temporary fix and the drive will most likely need replaced eventually.

that black "goo" on the samsung board is normal. and yes if you match the drives up perfectly you can just swap the PCB out and it will work. just make sure you match M25 or M28.

look at the dvd drive and find the big barcode on it find F/W= and next to that it will say either ms25 or ms28

The PCB is the circuit board on the bottom of the drive and it just pops out and disconnect each cable. they just pull out but be careful. also when switching mark the old and new board with a marker or something before you pull them out of the drive so you don't get them mixed up

ebay for cheap but reliability is suspect. Need to know where you are in the world to recommend more reliable source.

it may be your wormdrive motor. you could take the top off push the laser to the back. then turn xbox off and back on and see if the laser moves back to the front of the drive.

Couldn't you simply put any of the drives in the 360?

in order to put any other drive in (which wouldnt be cheaper or easier) would require reading of the current key, then creating spoofed firmware to match the new drive with the key injected into it. ANd finally flashing the new drive with this firmware. His best bet is the advice I gave him.

yeah you could but you would have to spoof the drive and like he said it isn't modded it's probably easier (for him) that he just replaces it by swapping the board.

correct and that site is much safer than going to ebay and not much more $$. especialy for a new drive. maybe even cheaper, i've seen them for 60 or 70 for a new one.

Ever figure out the grinding noise? In my experience i found the grinding to be the dvd spindle magnet comming unglued from the spindle. Usually it has just enough clamping force from the spindle magnet to hold the cd down. Without the magnet the result is a grinding noise as the cd touches the plastic tray and the top of the drive cover.

Anyway check that out, it's best to troubleshoot the magnet before you troubleshoot the laser and assembly. If it is the magnet just look at how it goes back together and a drop of superglue will do the trick.

I forgot about that one. ya check the spindle to see if there is what looks like a small metal washer on it.
