Im no expert but with a soft mod its safer, cheaper and wont void the warranty. Its only a firmware mod. When a new update comes out you run the chance of lossing all your mod.

Hard mod has been known to not be affected by any new updates. They will still read backuups but it does cost around 70-120 bucks to have someone professionally install the chip. It will void the warranty because the case needs to be open...

Im new, so bear with me!

I'll list some pros and cons.

Chip

Pros-
1. Greater game compatibility
2. Just solder the chip and you're done
3. Don't have to mess with the TP hack or different files
4. Ease of updating
5. Chip cannot be disabled by Nintendo

Cons-
1. Have to learn how to solder or pay somebody to do it
2. You can mess up your Wii on a failed installation job

Softmod

Pros-
1. No need to open your Wii
2. No need to solder

Cons-
1. Nintendo can easily disable any softmods through updates
2. You sometimes need to install different files- can be confusing for some
3. Game compatibility is not as great
4. You can brick your Wii if you do not know what you are doing

my gf just got a wii recently and she is not so tech savy as to be able to connect to Wi-fi to receive updates or play online etc. only time we'll really play it when were over at friends house etc.

so if i can get someone to soft mod the wii

-how good is the game compatibility?

-do we need 2 do any sort of maintenance to it? assuming we dont update wii firmware..

-how does the soft mod handle new releases?? chance of working?? 100% of not working?? if we want to play new games will we have to get a new soft mod?

can hard mod can play 99% of games and handles new releases with ease??

Softmod will never be as good as chip. Chips just are reliable and they ...just work. Softmod is a pain and you be nervous everytime nintendo updates your system and not everything will work properly.

Frankly modchips are pretty darn cheap now. A presoldered wiikey 2 costs 50 dollars which is about the cost of a video game. Its presoldered....so frankly unless you are a genuis or drop your diet coke onto your circuit board you can't screw up.

Now one question. Is your wii brand new? If so before you buy a modchip open your wii and check if you have epoxy. Its this wierd black glue stuff that keeps you from installing wii-clips. If you have this then you need to fork over an extra 20 bucks for a drivekey which just connects to your drive though the ribbon cable.

And you don't void the warranty by opening the wii. There are no warranty stickers on the wii. Just don't mess up the little white stickers on the wii that cover the screws. You can buy them on amazon anyways. Besides it really is easier than you think.

Well Some games need updates to play so she would not have to be hook up to wi-fi. But as of right now, no game needs 4.0 to run.
