forget the silicon stuff... it should contain SILVER, the microscopic bits of silver will fill voids or imperfections in the heatsink and die therefore making a better contact patch and transferring heat more efficiently. Ceramic stuff works too.

I don't think you should put paste on the ram as it is sort of a waste. Although it would aid in transferring heat but the two ram chips under the GPU are plastic. I have done it a few time but was advised by others to cease. The other two topside ram should get ramsinks. And the bottom side ram should get at least the MS pads but I use team executer pads on all four bottom side ram chips. I even add a larger ramsink to the topside hAna cuz its in the airflow of the gpu's exhaust.

Anyway... your fan problem is probally related to the CPU heatsink. Try AS5 on that one. Not too much. About the size of 1 or 2 pieces of rice.

OK, I picked up some Artic Silver 5 from Radio Shack, it solved the heating issue, but it Red Lighted again, after playing a little bit of R-Type it froze, I turned it off and back on, and got the RROD, any suggestions? Oh and the secondary code is "0102"

check the ultimate RROD thread again, 102 is more cold solder joint. technically you need a REFLOW that will give you months if not years of playing time. Anyway if you are going to keep xclamping it then let me ask you this: you switch from some crappy therm paste to as5 and the console booted right? did you just put as5 on the cpu cuz that guy was the one causing your last error? also just how well are you cleaning the dies and heat sinks? anyway looks like once you build some heat you loose connection again somewhere... take of the gpu heatsinks clean until you can see your face in it. reassemble with new paste. you might need to double up the pads under your ram or use team executer pands. just remember NO TOWELS, NO HAIRDRYERS, AND NO HEAT GUNS>...

It's half-way working now, no more RROD but it keeps freezing after about an hour of play. If I turn off then back on it works about 10mins and freezes again, but no RROD, any ideas?

gpu failure, for sure. maybe ram but more like gpu symptoms. tighten the screws on the gpu or do what I said above. if this continues you need a reflow before its too late.

Whats reflow? Also it freezes just setting on the dashboard. I noticed if I tighten the GPU heatsink to much it instanly Red Rings as soon as I power it on, if I don't tighten it enough it takes about 10 - 15secs for it to Red Ring, but if I get the tightness just right it boots and works for bit but still freezes.

I just discovered something, just for the hell of it I completly loosened the GPU heatsink just to see if I would get the RROD, and it boots fine, I obviously didn't leave it on but for a sec. So I'm guessing that I'm either getting one side to tight or not enough washers or something.

It's a launch console, Microsoft repaired it once in Novmember 2007, it got the RROD right before Guitar Hero 3 came out, they added the extra heatsink off the GPU heatsink, it's worked perfectly ever since, until 4 days ago.

I found out that if I don't tighten the back left corner of the GPU heatsink, it will about boot almost every single time. Now if I tighten it down I ALWAYS get the RROD. I'm using the X-Clamp fix where you drill bigger holes in the case.

Update: I solved the problem for now, put washers on the RAM under the heatsink, and used some thermal pads from an extra 360, to put on the top of the other 2.

Working great so far (Knock on wood).
