Well, I made myself a key extractor and before I actually test it out, can I cause any damage to the Liteon if I made it wrong?

The only way my extractor will interact w/ the Liteon is the probe @ the R707 hole right? I figure it can't cause any damage if I made it wrong / bad soldering.

Also, my Liteon currently has 1.51, will the key returned to me be the original or the 1.51 hacked key?

sum1 already had stevedawg and stevedawg85 is longer than 10 chars :(

just out of curiosity, but if you already have the latest FW on your drive, why are you going to mess with it again?

Also the Original key and the Hacked key are the same thing. That's the point of extracting the key.

Wabashman,
Gonna mod friends 360's and possibly for extra ca$h on Craigslist

As for damaging the drive/360...is it possible? I don't 100% trust my DIY extractor, but if it won't hurt, why not try it right....

I've read there is a small amount of voltage going through the Probe or Spear and advised not to touch it on anything except the R707. As for homemade I am not sure.

Agreed. I originally had a key reader from DIYgadget and it didn't work out for me. I had a Lite-ON drive that I had trouble reading the key. Following the steps to a T, I went to probe the R707 and a spark shot from the key reader. It ruined the drive and I wasn't able to obtain the key etc so I had a nice new doorstop.

That key reader had you clamp an alligator clip to the voltage regulator on the dvd connectivity kit and I think that was the cause of the spark.

I have since got a CK3 Lite with the Probe add-on and it has worked flawlessly. I like how the key reader is tied into the power of the connectivity kit. The LEDs is a huge plus!

The CK3 and Probe has paid for them selves. I have done several Lite-ONs that have made happy customers.

right! especially if you plan on doing it several times I would buy the xtractor or ck3. I have the xtractor and its nice and with the pptc fuse much less chance of messing it up.

or you could just buy the ck3 and bridge the points with solder if u have the right kit then this is safer in my opinion as u canT Slip off or short out on a diff place

I've been thinking about posting a "Pictorial DIY Extractor".

It is extremely easy to build, but I recommend all new parts.

The first extractor I built did not work and was made with an old NPN.

Second one I built worked perfectly first try. (Notice: Only new parts were used and it was constructed with the same idea/schematics.)

Cost - Under $10.00

But I already own a solder gun and flux/solder.

Good luck and keep a steady hand.

"That key reader had you clamp an alligator clip to the voltage regulator on the dvd connectivity kit and I think that was the cause of the spark. "

I will be doing the following, plugging in a wire (soldered w/ custom connectivity kit)into the molex on the PC. Is this basically what you are describing? Did you have ground connected correctly on the DB9.

As for Probing the R707 AND THEN the spark, anyone out there know how this was possible? how would probing the R707 spark the DIY CK and short out the 360 DVD drive, anyone have any ideas?

I used the kit from DIYgadget. Here is the tutorial that is provided from DIYgadget TUTORIAL.

This is what I was talking about specifically with the alligator clamp to the voltage regulator of the dvd connectivity kit. HERE
