I have never messed with my xbox 360 before and I am a wii modder (I mod other people's wii). Should I get a modchip for the 360. I don't mind soldering as long as I only have to replace the drive if I screw up.
What solutions are available for the xbox and what is the best.
Is there any good USB interface mods so I don't have to use SATA to flash my firmware.
Thanks,
ace
PS: I was looking into the xecuter blaster...how is it?

Ok, there really isn't any modchips for the Xbox 360 anymore. It's just the good 'ole firmware hack. And it works great, it's not like the SoftMii for the Wii. Now the Xecuter Blaster is pretty cool actually. I mean, I personally don't have it, but it's nice for updating the firmware. Cause with that, you don't need to take apart your 360 every time a new update for the firmware comes out.
There aren't really any USB interface mods to flash the firmware. The only way (that I know of...) is through SATA, and that's really not hard at all.

i'm with germ, chips just aren't worth much for 360 in terms of versatility. there is couple that have lots of functions but depend on independent developers to write code for them. and not many people are doing that. if playing backups is your priority, then flash the dvd drive.

but should I get the blaster? I don't really want to have to open my xbox every five seconds. Just wondering if there are any good ones besides the blaster.

Firmware updates don't happen as often as they used to. For example BenQ 1.41 was released on 12/25/07 (xbins date), BenQ 1.5 was released on 12/22/08, and BenQ 1.51 was released on 3/06/09.
In my opinion, the blaster is a waste of money. But I guess people are lazy and don't want to take 1-2 minutes to open up the 360.

Regradless you will have to open you xbox. If you feel that opening it up every time you need to flash it will be a hassle for you then get the blaster as other post said. I have never used it, but always wondered if the new edition of the blaster required the VT6421A card still install on your pc to flash?

Alright I won't get the blaster.
So I have to buy a PCI card even if my PC has free sata ports right?
And the PCI card has to be one of the ones that are recommended right?
BTW home depot doesn't sell torx 10 screwdriver do they? I have to buy that online right?

You might get lucky and your onboard SATA might be compatible. If not, the VIA 6421 card will do all 4 types of drives.
I'm sure Home Depot should have torx. Pretty much any hardware place sells torx.

AFAIK the NE Blaster is transparent to whatever sata controller you have. I thought it was just a switch. Switching between two sata paths 1) from mobo to drive or 2) drive to external sata port on blaster

So are you saying that the blaster works with normal onboard sata controllers?

what i am saying is that I was under the impression that the blaster has nothing to do with compatibility of you sata controller. if your onboard worked without blaster then it should would with blaster and vice versa.

so then should I go out and buy a card? I have the asus striker extreme motherboard and it uses an nvidia chipset.
I have read that the drives only work with via chipsets
