I would like to be able to play my UMDs off of the memory card, so I don't have to carry a bunch of UMDs when I travel. I understand that I would have to change firmware. Am I correct that this currently can't be done with PSP Slims or 3000s? Would I be best off buying an Original PSP? Hardware wise, is the slim PSP a better unit?

Thanks!

i have a slim and phat. the slim is one in "daxter" pack and it was hackable. if you want a psp that you can hack without reservations then the phat would be the way to go.

Most but not all Slims can be downgraded, if its more than 6 months old you should be fine, however to be sure the Phat is the way.

The slim is not as strong as the phat (they removed steel to make the slim lighter) other than that there is not huge differences, the slim can output to a TV, can charge from the USB, is slightly thiner and lighter, has a little better screen. Not a major improvement.

Thanks for the replies!

I plan on buying the PSP online, so to make life easier I'll just buy a phat PSP. The benefits are outweighed by the chance of having a PSP that can't be modded.

I'm looking at the refurbished phat PSP through gamestop, having read that they replace the screen, etc, so they should be in good shape. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

there's other improvements to the slim. raised d-pad, double the onboard ram, and longer battery life, especially when using the official STAMINA battery.

i pulled 8+ hours this weekend on one charge, and there was 10% left before i got near a charger. shows how much it saved me being stuck in a car for that long. brightness level 2 and all speeds to 333mhz.

also, when getting a memory card, get a sandisk, from the stores. they run much better than the official sony ones by a hefty amount. i use to only get the sony cards, but after switching to the green sandisk 8gig, the psp responds quicker.

got a whole lot more to list . . .

The slims with version 1 mother board are best, as they can make and use pandora. I would recommend that. The psp-3000 was a total loss to sony! I dont even know why they still insist on putting more security, there are people nearly as or more skilled.

This is what I'd like to get, but I it seems like if I buy a new slim from an online retailer I will most likely not get this version of the slim. Is there a way to tell on the box what version of the slim it is?

Yeah, there are a few packs like those that come with daxter. Look online for them. Or buy the REALLY old ones. I think second hand might be best, just use pandora and goto hardware info for the mobo version

which is why i was glad the local fry's sold the original slims before launch date. i got tipped off they were selling them weeks before release.

you won't be able to determine the slim without pspident and pandora's battery. and 99% of the time, game stores won't let you test out the psp, since you're breaking the warranty in front of them.

Thanks for all the replies.

Just one more questions...is there anything I should know about the memory cards? Could I just get any Pro Duo Memory Stick, are they all fast enough to run an iso off of?

general rule, NEVER buy of ebay. always get it in stores because they're guaranteed to be real ones.

and get the sandisk ones; preferably the colored ones. i've tested a sandisk and a sony, and the sandisk is the better one.

I have another question (thanks for the replies btw)...

I read through the whole process of installing CFW, got a feel for it, but having not yet done it myself I'm a little unclear.

Essentially (and maybe overly simplified) I will basically be installing stuff to a Memory Stick, then using that to change the battery from being a regular battery to one that would be like on a development unit, then install the firmware and I'm all set?

After doing so, do I have to keep that memory stick in? Or would I be able to swap out memory sticks containing different collections of games?

You dont have to keep themagic mms in, and u can remove all the files there are and use it like a normal mms, just format it (unless u plan for using it late)
You can convert the batter back too.
