This might have been posted and addressed elsewhere, and if so I apologize :)
I have had three Hitachi 0078fk drives die on me in the past after they've been sucessfully flashed (or so I think). They will usually work a good 6 months with some good use and suddenly they will start popping up with unplayable disc errors as well as dirty disc errors mid-game.
Are these occurences solely based on the cheap factor of the HL lasers? Or could it be the firmware in the long run (even though it worked for months at a time)?
(All drives have been 78fk's dated july/august 2006).

Yeah, I'm not a fan of Hitachis. Although Jungle Flasher makes it unbelievably easy to mod ;). I personally prefer BenQs and Lite-ONs. A couple of my friends have gone through the same thing with Hitachis.

thanks for the quick reply leerage.
I guess this will be my last Hitachi ordered =P
I'll move on to a new console or a spoofed drive for the reliability!

I have a launch hitachi console here and it sucks (customers 360).
It reads originals fine, but it's hit and miss with backups. And yes, they are verbs.
I've tried just about everything with it and nothing seems to help it.
My personal Hitachi, (with a new laser eye btw), works perfectly. Of course this is the third eye in this drive.
I'm afraid this customer just won't understand though...

if the customer doesn't understand then give them back their console and tell them to figure it out. I know that's bad for business but some customers you just don't need. They should be able to comprehend that a 3 or 4 year old dvd drive will need some maintenance. Thats like taking your car to a mechanic and putting one snow tire on it.

Yeah, I'm not that worried about it really. I've dealt with many.
It's the ones that think that the newly flashed firmware caused the problem and not that it's a 4 year old system that get to me.
I have a new laser eye to sell them though. lol.

Hitachi drives are def. a sore spot for me as well. I used to think that the 78 and 79 drives were fine and that it was just the older Hitachis but some of my customers have been bringing them back and needing a new drive. I spoof in a sammy and haven't heard any complaints yet.

I have a launch day 78fk and have never had a problem, never even had to clean the laser. It has been flashed for almost a year now and has never had a problem reading backups.
