I have a modded Wii with firmware 3.4E. I can't install Homebrew with this version. It seems that despite I have a modded Wii I still need to have an original copy of Zelda

Or am I wrong?

How can I install Homebrew? I need to downgrade to 3.2 and without homebrew I can't do it. That's what I read at least.

If you have a wii on 3.4 then you need an original copy of zelda to install homebrew. Sorry, thats just the way it is.

No way to downgrade it either without homebrew. You shouldn't have to downgrade though, any homebrew you want to use will work on 3.4 just fine.

Thanks for reply

The problem is that certain games like Rock Band 2 require this downgrading for some reason

What do you mean where I am living? You mean if it is PAL?

I suspected that the downloaded game is not working because I used NTSC version. For some reason Rock Band 2 is not found in PAL. I am downloading GH - PAL and I will check if it works.

for you to play rock band does not mean you need to downgrade firmware (3.4 to 3.2) all you need is to install IOS for rockband, so it can be done in 3.4. But you must have homebrew.

But that's the problem. I can't install homewbrew unless I use Zelda hack. I modded my Wii so not to buy Zelda and it turns out that Zelda game is too important

You don't need to buy it, you can borrow it or rent it one time.

Wait, you have a modchipped wii so you shouldnt need homebrew. The IOS patches you need are on the disk unless you brickblocked it. Just let them run.

Why do u need an original game if ur WII has a modchip. I've never upgraded to 3.4 but i thought that only trucha signed disks were affected by the upgrade. I dont see why a zelda backup wouldnt work with ur console?

SO are you saying that with a copy of Zelda I can downgrade, if I have a modded Wii?

I missed that you said you have a modded wii in the first post. Yes, you can use a backup copy of zelda to install the homebrew channel and downgrade. But as I already said, its not necessary.

To unblock the downgrader homebrew on firmware 3.4 you will have to follow the 'wii fix guide' which involves installing IOS16. Once you complete that the downgrade itself will be unnecessary because unblocking the downgrader will also unblock the wad manager and let you install the IOS patches on 3.4 as well.

Also, as I already said, if you use an unbrickblocked rockband 2 disk and dont have your modchip set to block updates from the disk then it will automatically install the updates you need and you wont have to mess with homebrew at all.

There are NO games that require a downgrade to play.

Ooooh Wait a sec. Let's gets things straight here.

Here are ALL my facts.

1. I own a modded Wii (still don't know version)
2. My Wii is 3.4E because I live in Europe and use the PAL.
3. I downloaded Rock Band 2 NTSC (Couldn't find a PAL version). The Rock Band Picture is visible in Wii menu but when I press button A, the Wii crashes.

So after googling and entering many forums I came to the conclusion that maybe I have to install Homebrew and downgrade to 3.2

Now penguin98, you're saying new things here:

1. "To unblock the downgrader homebrew on firmware 3.4 you will have to follow the 'wii fix guide' which involves installing IOS16. Once you complete that the downgrade itself will be unnecessary because unblocking the downgrader will also unblock the wad manager and let you install the IOS patches on 3.4 as well."

I did NOT understand what this wii fix guide actually does and what's the function. Does this means I need to this to be able to play a copied Rock Band 2?

2. "if you use an unbrickblocked rockband 2 disk and dont have your modchip set to block updates from the disk then it will automatically install the updates you need and you wont have to mess with homebrew at all."

What's unbrickblocked rockband 2? Doesn't statement 2 contrast with with what you said in statement1? From where do I get this unbrickblocked rockband2 anyway?

3. "There are NO games that require a downgrade to play."

:) Does this mean that I don't have to install homebrew nor downgrading in order to play Rockband2? So if yes what's wrong with Rockband 2. I copied it with ImageBurn on DVD-R just like all games I did till now.

Thank you for your patience and replies

I love Malta

Ok, there's a couple problems and sources of confusion here, and this is going to be a little long and possibility confusing, but I'll break it down.

There are several factors that could be (and likely are) causing problems.

1) Your console and the game region do not match. Sometimes this is not a problem, other times results in video errors such as black and white screen, off-center picture or no picture at all. It can also cause the console to crash entirely, like the problem you're having.

The easiest fix for this particular problem is to redownload the game from the correct region, or to install homebrew channel and boot the game through gecko OS and force PAL video output. Forcing the proper output doesn't work for all games, but it does work for most.

2) In addition to this, rockband 2 and some other recent games include minor firmware patches that they require to run. These are not firmware level updates (like upgrading from 3.3 to 3.4) but instead small IOS patches. In the case of rockband 2 the patch is required for the instruments to work. If you try to run a game that requires one of these patches without installing it, then the console will crash. Again, identical to your problem.

Generally we see this problem with people who are using the backup loader or booting out-of-region games through gecko OS, since both those methods block updates from the disk. It can also happen though if you have a modchip that blocks updates from the disk, or if you brickblocked the disk before burning it. Brickblocking is removing the updates from a disk to prevent it from installing a wrong-region firmware. The IOS patches are not region-locked and can be installed on any region wii, but they are still blocked by any of those update blockers.

At this point I cant determine which problem you are having, could be anything or everything I listed above.

Basically, I can see 2 options for you.

1) Redownload the game from the proper region and hope it runs the updates and/or works. If it does not then your modchip is likely blocking updates as most, but not all, wii games you download online are unmodified, meaning that they should still include the updates. So you will have to find out what modchip you have and how to turn that option off. And while it is off you should not play any out of region games.

2) Using your backup copy of zelda, follow the guide to install the homebrew channel. The other parts of the guide are not needed, just the part about installing the homebrew channel. You will then have to follow the first 3 steps of the wii fix guide that the homebrew channel guide links to to unblock installing wads on your wii. Once you do that you can use the wiiscrubber program to extract the IOS patches (in wad format) from your game disk and then use the wad manager to install them on your wii. If you're still using the NTSC version of the game then you may still need to boot the game through gecko OS and force PAL video output if the video settings are a problem.

Whew... I really hope that cleared up most of your questions. I know it is still a little complicated.

Wow Penguin

That's what I call help.

Thank you. I will definitely start from the Homewbrew. I am still sceptical about the IOS business. It looks a bit dodgy, a potential fro bricking the Wii.

I will inform you how this goes

Hey guys I found this post upon searching for an answer for this problem. So Penguin I basicly went and tried everything you suggested in your posts. First i installed the HB channel, next i tried extracting the ISO.wad files and installing them directly, next i tried downgrading to 3.2E and still none of these things worked i still get the this cd could not be read. So you wouldn't happen to have any other ideas as to how i can fix this problem. Also rooney did you ever get it to work? If you did how? Any help would be greatly appreciated guys.

Luv U with Mouth Long time also Thanks in advance

Since you were able to downgrade firmware , DVD cannot be read is caused by:

1) cios not installed (install cios 8 , 9 or 10) - just google
2) media problem - used Verbatim -R
3) Used the Gamma loader channel or apps

Ok so i use DVD-R Sony DVDs and i never had a problem with them before. Next i installed a lot of cIOSs but I'm gonna download cios 10 just for good measure and i did use the gamma channel but i also tried without it and got the same problem.

Ok so i downloaded rev10 of the cios but i'm not sure i know how to install it. i get a normal wad file and an installer .dol file and all the instructions say is
Copy "IOS36-64-v1042.wad" file to the root of a SD card.
- Insert the SD card on your Wii.
- Run the installer and select "WAD Installation".
so i installed the IOS36-64-v1042.wad through the wad manager but when i try to run the cIOS36_rev10-Installer.dol file it gives me an error -1ret which is i'm guessing because its not a wad file.
Any ideas?

Did you even follow the guide? Get the newest WAD Manager, install IOS 257 WAD first. Did you do that?
