There really isnt any reason to upgrade to V4.0 firmware yet, it depends if you use WAD files alot and this firmware will support SDHC cards upto 32Gb and will enable you to play WADS off the SD card.
Some updates etc need to be done before updating to 4.0 to still enable you to play hacked WADS assuming you have already installed the HomeBrew channel, softmodded it etc. :)

I wouldnt update.....But thats just me. Give it a few months till someone figures out how to install homebrew on 4.0 just in case someone else is on your wii and deletes your current homebrew. If it gets deleted you cant do the TP hack. Just wait!
Im new, so bear with me!

when you upgrade did you used Waninkoko upgrade patch or nintendo? If you used Waninkoko then this might the case. Not sure if is safe to do the nintendo when you already have the selected IOS. Or might just a patch to play the game.
I upgraded my system using nintendo and no problem seen yet..

OK, so I take it that I should upgrade to 4.0 if I:
1) want to use bigger SD cards
2) don't want to install WADs
Is there anything else I should know before moving to 4.0? It seems like the benefit of 1 is outweighed by the cost of 2 unless you really want to abuse your SD card.

Im not sure at all im no pro , i had asked my modder and he told me just to run all games that give me that issue on the back up launcher or to simple rip and patch the game to aviod updating & bricking the system.
He also told me that i could update as long as it only updates the ISO and not the system. But to be of the safe side do not update and run all original games thru the hb backup launcher. ya dig?

I'd really like to use the USB loader, but do I need to update to 4.0 to run it? I've already got cIOS36 v9 installed. Is the USB loader specific to 4.0 only?

@jahbreeze - USB loader does not require you to upgrade to 4.0. I have been using it on 3.2 (although at this moment I'm upgrading to 4.0 for the SD Card benefits).
@jrock305 - It is in beta, but I've had no problems at all with the loader. The problems most people seem to be having are either HD incompatibility or problems getting the various windows portals for wbfs to work properly. I read from many that they couldn't get it to work on XP but could on Vista. For me, it was the opposite, I couldn't get it to work on Vista, but my XP machine had no problems at all. I found that deleting the partition and adding a new partition (without formating) through the disk manager was the best way to go, and then format through the windows wbfs gui or on the wii itself. I've got an old 30gb laptop hd in an external enclosure with 16 discs on it, and it's only about half full. It's working great for me. So even though it's in beta, the problems seem to be more in dealing with partitions and windows portals. Once you get that working, it's EASY.

I do indeed. Use this guide. It's easy, straight to the point, and larrylje is very good at helping you out if you get stuck.
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/735325
TIP: Read the whole guide before you begin. Make sure you understand what you're doing before you start, or you can mess up your wii. But if you follow the guide in its entirety, you'll be fine. Also, be careful if you read on after the guide at the beginning -- many of the questions that are asked and answered apply to older versions of the guide (it was written when 3.4 was brand new, so many have to do with issues from that upgrade. If you're looking to go to 4.0, these won't necessarily apply). It takes some time to learn the terminology and how things work, but it's worth it! Spend a little time reading, and you'll be fine. Good luck.
