My son's xbox has just got the 3 red rings. I want to know that if I replace it could this happen again or have Microsoft fixed this problem with the newer Xbox's. Any help greatly appreciated.
usually when a box gets red ringed, they are fixable, if it is still under warranty, send it to ms, let them fix it, they will most likely give a you a new"er" box, if not the red ring usually comes back with time, could be 1 month, 6 months, even a year, but they do usually come back. no harm in trying, rrod x-clamp is actually pretty easy.
RROD FIX
Eh although i like that a chick does the video she really doesn't effectively overheat the console.
When the console shows the overheating error (2 red lights) it cuts power to the xbox completely. This doesn't heat up the xbox enough to let it reflow the bga below the chips. Think about it, the solder below the chips have to reach a temp close to 440F. The cpu would get hotter than the gpu and it would cut the power. The overheating error usually comes pretty quick when you don't have any airflow. I haven't measured the temps when the overheating error comes up beacause i never get the errror but llamma cautions that overheating without cooling the cpu is ineffective.
If that rrod tutorial above doesn't work try the llamma tutorial.
This tutorial is a little different, it involves drilling and longer screws and more washers. I've had 100% success rate using a variation of the llamma xclamp replacement.
You can follow the overheating part of llammas tutorial with the xclamp replacement posted above but it's not nearly effective as the llamma xclamp fix.
My 360 broke a few days ago with rrod. I had opened it to flash the drive and had it opened for months before it broke and I never got around to flashing it. I bought it back in November 2005 and never had any problem with it until now. Sometimes, I even left it on 14 hours straight and it was fine(left 4 dead zombie achievement). Anyway, It freezes after I play a game for a few mins. It never freezes while on the dashboard. However, after it freezes, it will keep freezing when I turn it on until I let it cool down. When I turn it on a few times after the initial freeze, it eventually shows no output on the tv and the three red lights appear. If I wait about two minutes or less and turn it on again, it will work fine until I go and play a game again. Basically, I can't play a game for more than 10 mins without it freezing. I made a mess of opening it and broke the eject button and I don't know how to get the error code with no eject button (the eject button on the remote doesn't seem to work when trying to get the light sequence to determine the code). Does know how I can identify the exact problem? Also, seen as my 360 is nearly 3 and a half years old, will the x-clamp fix solve the problem for long?
