This is regarding the "reading bubble" issue that many people have. PS3 no longer reads any kind of discs, a reading bubble shows up on the upper right hand corner. Everything else works fine.

My question is: If the laser is faulty, is the disc supposed to spin when loaded? I've read threads where people say once the lens reads and recognizes the type of media, then it will spin. Others say their discs spin once inserted, regardless of the condition of lens. On mine, the disc ejects in the same position as I load them in.

I'm trying to figure out if the problem is the lens not reading, or the motor not spinning the disc. If you had the same problem, did replacing only the lens help?! Thanks in advance.

i just went through the same thing it is the laser that recognizes the dvd's the blurays the disks etc. which is why it wont spin. so i bought a kes 400 aaa which comes with the deck and the laser and it is very easy to swap and then it was fixed. it only took 15 minutes to swap.

Update:

The problem was indeed the laser itself, not the motor. Once a disc is inserted, the laser reads the type of media then the motor spins. I replaced the lens itself (KES-400A) and now everything is up and running. You do not have to replace the whole deck (KEM-400AAA) if your discs aren't spinning, it is not the motor.

The best way to find out is to take the top off the ps3 to where the blu ray drive is exposed plug everything in insert your dvd or blu ray and look to see if it turns at all when you insert it. If it makes at least a 1/4 of a turn your drive is okay its the lens.

Oh please, dont talk about faulty PS3's lol, ive got 4 of them, and I know they are all going to break down
But, having said that, one of them is almost 3 years old, and my nephew has one that he got from japan the same month they came out, and his is still going on strong
perhaps sony have learned their lesson since the dark alex issues on the psp, and the disc read errors on the ps2?

Definitely worth a shot, but it's likely that the lens is defective.
