go to my computer on dekstop, right click , ...
select manage....
select storage...
select disk management.
look on the USB HDD if is logical or primary.
it is color coded below the window (legend).
dark BLUE - primary
light blue - logical

If it is logical create a secondary partition.
used acronis suite, create partition , set to primary, format to FAT32..
insert USB HDD to Wii..

does it recognized now?

try logical otherwise the list for HDD is wrong, i have my friend the 320Gig will post back it if works. If you just bought then you can return or swap. Maybe the 500gig draws a lot of power. any anomaly/indicator in the LED HDD?

Below has been tested and works:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=9084135&type=product&id=1218018141589

partioned into 2: FAT32 and WBFS

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8490572&type=product&id=1186003683700

I have also a generic USB 2.5 Sata enclosure just put my spare laptop HDD(120gig) , also the old 80 gig WD external AC powered.

It those listed above does not work then it can be the wii is also picky.

Even it will work on your PC it's the Wii does does not detect the HDD (error -6), as what i mentioned to you the 320gig works.. 500 did not. Its a hardware issue between HDD(newer version) and the Wii.
