1st post so hi!

I have been having major aggro with my online gaming for the past few months. I have the usual issues with not being able to join certain friends for games or when reponding to invites getting the game not available message.

This is what I have done so far:

Ditched the useless Thompson speedtouch router AOL made me sign up for an 18 month contract for and I now have a netgear.

A friend had the same issue with AOL and had some written instructions on optimising his connection, one of them was to set the MTU to 1400. I have done this.

I have spent countless hours on the phone to India where all of AOL's call centres seem to be, changed countless settings on my PC, laptop and router's.

I was using a hard wire connection and tried a wireless connection which worked for a day then back to the orange dot when you press select in a game to see your kills and connection etc.

The thing is on my PS3 when changing from hard wire to wireless it says the signal strength is 100% as the router is less than a metre away so I know the router is working. I am wondering whether the PS3 might have an issue of its own?

Anyone know something I might be able to try which I have not tried already?

The router is a netgear DG834G V4.

Cheers.

Does wired work? Best to get wired to work first before trying wireless

The metal gear online site http://www.konami.jp/mgo/en/hd/support/tool.html has a tool you can download that you run on your pc and it makes suggestions on how to change your ps3 settings to game online. You could try that out if all else fails.

Run speedtest.net and post all the results, ping, upload and download.

I was getting nearly 6 meg before and still a rubbish connection.
Playing COD5 yesterday on the new zombie map I was able to join a game after being invited and was getting a really good connection, 3 bars. When that game finished we started another one and all I had was the orange dot. It just seems really random, sometimes I get a good connection on wired sometimes wireless sometimes bad on both.
This might be all down to Treyarch's servers?

Yeah download speed tends to do that, you've got enough throughput upload and download, your problem is ping aka latency. You're results show 250 and 180, that's very high for gaming and it seems to fluctuate a lot. You really want to be under 100ms for gaming.

Your internet provider/setup is the problem. There's nothing you can do on your end, I'd call them and see if there's a plan that can get you lower ping or you may have to switch isp's.
