I if I am going to be buying a SYBA SY-VIA6421-3S1P PCI SATA/IDE controller, will I be able to flash every drive to current firmware? I have searched and read, and I want a definite answer. Thanks to everyone in advance!
As long as it's the VIA6421 you should be fine. Though with the LiteOn drives, there have been errors flashing it, but if you follow the instructions on flashing, you should be okay!
Yes SLAX will get the drive into Mode B. But the only drives that use Mode B is the Hitachi, so if your system is new, it most likely is not a Hitachi.
Well I convinced my buddy to pay for the pci controller. I have already flashed mine, which is currently at ixtreme 1.4 on another friends computer a while back which happened to move. Now I will be flashing his, which happens to be brand spakin' new. I can't believe mine is still alive. I fixed the RR0D and swapped out the drive and it's still going (it's first gen). Will I need to look out for any specific drives that offer a bit of a challenge to flash?
The only ones you need to look out for are the LiteOn's. They are the ones being shipped in the current systems. And they are in systems that get repaired by M$. Those require you getting the key (a hard process if you don't have proper tools) from the DVD Drive, and then flashing it.
