Hi,
I bought an XBox 360 Arcade a few weeks ago. Its not a Jasper unit. I have Halo 1 and 2 for original XBox and when I put them in the 360 it said I needed a HDD. I purchased a 120GB HDD from eBay (Hong Kong seller) to load 360 games onto, etc.
When I put in XBox games, the screen goes black for a few seconds and then a dialog comes up saying "The game could not start. Please download the game again. Visit xbox.com/support for help.". There is only one option, "OK".
I've tried running the Backwards Compatibility update, that didn't help. I'm running NXE (so I didn't really expect the BC update to work anyway).
Does anyone have any ideas? The original games work fine in an original XBox. I have a gut feeling its because the HDD is not a MS original. It is a non-OEM. I've tried formatting the drive from the Dashboard and all other functions work fine (storing games, downloading trailers, etc).
Cheers!

I have got exactly the same issue with Mercenaries 1 for old Xbox. It's an original disc and doesn't work. Everytime I try to play it I get the message that I should update (what I already did). Btw, I got a 20 Gig Hong Kong hdd.
Xbox 360: Slim untouched with a faked 320 GB harddrive for XBL, phat with LT 3.0, played Halo early, so going on live would be an instand ban, also with a faked 320 GB harddrive
PS3: Untouched 160 GB Slim, 60 GB Fat with latest Rogero and 160 GB internal harddrive.
PSVita: hardly ever play it
GameCube: Black with a Viper chip installed. With gameboy player. Trying to get a Wavebird controller.

Xbox live isn't a problem tho. I use live all the time and have alot of content for games downloaded on it. the only problem is when I try to load original (not downloaded) xbox dvd's. it keeps saying to redownload the content (even tho it's never been downloaded)

yea it's wierd, says update succesful yet, always says download again. if this hard drive is a homemade kind ie, a wd hard drive formatted for 360, could there be something missing from it that would cause no xbox 1 games to play?

Not sur3e exactly, but everything that has to do with 360 HDD mod/hack is complicated as hell and half of the time they don't work. I have no better advise than get a cheap orginal 20GB HDD and install the back compat. update.

Yes, there could be something missing, for some time the hddhackr didn't create the partition with the emulator for Xbox games on the BEVS harddrive. But it could also be the compatibility update, when I did it with a CD it didn't work even tho it said update successful. Had to go on live to get the compatibility update.
Is the game on the compatibility list anyway?

Yea, I've tried max payne 1&2, halo 1&2, and elder scrolls 3: morrowind. Are the missing files easy to reinstall using hddhackr? or would it compromise my saves and other content already on the hd?

Having this problem too. Popped in Jade Empire (my only xbox game) and the "download game again" error pops up. Tried installing the backward computability update from CD, and that seemed to install, but the game still doesn't work. i'm using as refurbed xbox with 20gb hard drive

Your hong kong hard drive is fake, built with hddhackr, and it doesnt have the second partition that the system requires to run backwards compatibility software.
This is probably because the drive is smaller than 20 gb, and the seller of the drive thought that you'd never use the second partition and could cheat you out of your 4 gbs.

Yea sounds like the second partition is missing, which you could technically add yourself using xplorer360, and you may need a hex edit program as well. although this would probably require you to format the hard drive.

You need to put the files into partition 2, someone asked me to have a look at theirs for them and partition 2 was empty (also hong kong seller on ebay) so I took the partition 2 files from an elite hdd I have and put them into that hdd's partition 2 using xplorer360 and it worked and started playing xbox originals.
If it already has a partition 2 do the same as I did, if not follow what leerage said.

I just looked at the release 1.10 of HDDhackr. It now adds in partition 0 or 2 if you want it to. So no more hex editing.
