cant get rid of ydl6.1 or get my hdd space back

how do people.
after numerous attempts of installing yellow dog 6.1 i finally cracked it. thing is noone thought it a good idea to tell me NOT to use the same password for the root as my user account which i did. so now i cant have any admin privlidges which has left me with no wifi. (not happy)
so i thought id wipe my hdd and start again, thing is again noone told me that formating the hdd doesnt remove lynix or the partion. therefore my hdd space have gone from 310gb free to 250gb, meaning iv lost 60gb of space to all these partions.
iv read that by doing a FULL FORMAT, the whole hdd will be wiped and i could start again. what a waste of 18.5 hours that was seen as its made no difference at all, and lynux is still there. needless to say im not to pleased with some people posting information when they obviously have no idea what there doing( not aimed at anyone one here, i used information from other sites which i wont be doing again)
so, basically, what i need to no is,
1: how do i get lynux off my hdd completly?
2: how do i remove all partions from my hdd?

Did you use the formatting utility on the PS3 or Linux??? Because if you did it via Linux it won't work (I don't think). Now I'm no expert at Linux on PS# but I am smart enough to know that if you format from the PS3 it should wipe it off completely, even if you do a quick format. It worked for me, I had YDL6 and there is no reason why it should not work for you.

i used the ps3 formating option. iv done a quick format numerous time and iv done a full format but neither of them have got rid of the partitions or linux.
am i going to have to use a pc and someting like partition magic? or is there any other way?
