I have posted two threads before detailing my xbox 360's rrod. I bought it in November 2005 and I never had trouble with it until about a week ago when it started to freeze with weird lines on the the screen and a high pitched short lasting sound. It eventually gave me the rrod but I could keep playing it even up to an hour afterwards if I let it cool down. Then it started to get more frequent and I decided to take out the fans and clean them. I did just that and it hasn't jammed since for the last few days. I never checked the error code sequence thing when I got the rrod because the button from my dvd drive was missing. My motherboard and fan were very dusty and that must have been causing the problem. What I want to know is; is using a Hoover to suck up dust from the mother board safe and how damaging can dust be to the small components on the motherboard? I appreciate any answers and thanks in advance!

I would use compressed dry air to remove the dust not a hoover. You need to be careful with static discharge. Dust can be a insulator and cause overheating but I would think you would have gotten 2 red lights not 3. As long as it works I would not mess with it much until you have to then try the hybrid xclamp fix as your box is now out of warranty.

It was three red lights. I read that dust from the fan causes it to take up more voltage and it then gives the 3 red lights due to lack of voltage. I'm thinking of flashing the drive and want the console to last as long as possible. Can dust seriously damage the motherboard's components or is it that harmful?

like i said the dust acts as an insulator and will make the components heat up and can become faulty. so yes a clean system will be less prone to problems.

Nice theory on the increased power draw of the fans not sure if this was what ur problem was but i suppose it possible.

Is it possible to fix any RRoD with the hybrid X-clamp fix?

all types of errors can be fixed but not every xbox is fixable. it easy enough and cheap enough it worth a try but if you still have a warranty with MS then just make them fix it.

I got rrod again with error code 0102 which is an unknown error but likely involves a solder issue with the gpu, cpu or ram. I think I might give it to a friend of mine so he can reflow the board. I spilled a tiny bit of water on the motherboard earlier. When I turned it on I got the rrod. I turned it on again and it worked fine for about 15 mins and then froze. I turned it on again and the rrod came up. I think it is an overheating issue with the gpu but would having spilled a bit of water on the motherboard affect it in any way? I couldn't imagine it working for 15 minutes if it did.

it could cause a short but i think that usually creates 0001 or 0002. Did you let it dry any before powering it back up?

I just turned it back on and it seemed fine but I didn't turn the tv on and i just turned it back on. When I went to turn it on later, there was no tv output so I turned it off and on again and that's when I got the rrod. I checked the code and it was 0102. I played a game for 15 mins then and it jammed and rrod again with same error sequence. I don't think the water thing is the problem but I can't understand how I can keep using my console even after getting rrod. I'm playing for the last half hour and it hasn't jammed. It will though.

(don't mean to hyjack thread) I had a similar problem, although mine didn't just come up with 4 RROD, it sometimes came up with one (can't remember specifics), and other times it came up with two on the right side, etc.. Anyway mine was under a year old at the time, so i took it back to the retailer, and they had to refund the full amount (which was $500, australian).

Even though it is not malfunctioning, and assuming it is still in warranty, i'd send to MS.
