nope if you dont have homebrew installed and installed the 4.0 update your are going to have to wait until new releases are out. Twilight hack is forever gone its done its job over the years. The only way left to get the homebrew and softmod it is via mod chip.

Excuse my ignorance as I am new to all of this but what is the fundamental advantage of the updates? Or should I say what is the disadvantage of not going ahead? The only thought I have is that perhaps some games require the update??? Is that it? Thanks.

The only major feature in 4.0 other than blocking the Hack is the SD channel where you can load and play Wiiware(VC) games using the SD card.If you don't play a lot of Virtual Games then you can stay in either 3.2 or 3.4 firmware. There is a new hack in the cooking for 4.0 but it's not yet out. so stay tune..

I hope it will come out soon because I updated my wii without installing home brew channel & now I can't install it with version 4.

Hi..
I was wondering about 4 too, so far Ive held off from updating to 4 from 3.4
I have HB and USB Loader and Backup Loader installed and as far as im aware you dont need 4 unless you want the SD features.
But what happens if I just sit at 3.4 with my current mods as they are and a new game comes out that updates to 4 am I going to be in trouble?
I believe no games have 4 as an update so far but what happens when they do ? whats excpected of us to keep running as we are with our mods?
Thanks again :-)

Thing you can do..
1) brickblock the game- by removing the the disk update.
2) update to the 4.0 firmware release, load ios60.wad first.
3) used starpatch or preloader to block disk update and also has a tool to recover from brick.
- item 1 and 2 are both safe.. 3 is also safe if it used properly. My Wii was in 3.2 before so i just used starfall to block update.

Thanks Fibre,
So would you say it was safe to update to 4 now then? As it was not so long ago you were advising to hold off for a while.
As I say Im happy with 3.4 but dont want to fall behind of get caught out with a rouge update or similar.
Thanks again :-)

its your call, it's been safe ever since. Depends on what method you used and custom loaders you have...some users brick their Wii due to preloaders or Softmii which causes to conflict with the System Menu. best path is used the nintendo update. If you really need the SD game channel then you can update to 4.0.

Do your back up games still work when you upgrade to 4.0. I thought there is a patch to block them.

The only downside to 4.0 firmware really is that the Twilight Hack has been completely blocked.
So if you do update to 4.0 make sure you do not uninstall the Homebrew Channel or you are out of luck with running any homebrew applications that are run through the Homebrew Channel (this includes formating the Wii system which will wipe out the Homebrew Channel).
@kjdiltz
If you patch IOS60 before updating to 4.0 then yes everything still works. I am on 4.0U and everything still works fine.

What about us with no previous Home brew Channel installed & have updated to version 4?Is there anyway to play back ups or copies? Is chipping the only option or somebody is working for a solution & where to look for it??

There is a hack being worked on at this time that may be able to install it but it is not done and has not been released yet. So for now you have to wait.
