I'm sorry, I have searched and researched for days but I am still a little too confused to be comfortable with doing the update without someone clarifying the instructions with my specific situation.

I am running 3.2U right now.I have a WiiKey with the 1.9s firmware. I have HBC and a wad manager installed. I do not have WiiGator or gamma installed. HBC is version 1.0.1, and in the HBC home screen it says IOS36 v4.18. Is that my cIOS version? I cant find anything that says where I can find that info. Will installing WiiGator and Gamma be all that I need to do to get the right cIOS?

Will the instructions at yafaze Be all I need to do once I install WiiGator and gamma? Which method should I use?

I apologize, I didnt want to start a new thread for this, but I havent been able to get a clear answer on how I go about this, and it seems the Wii modding scene has gotten a bit more complicated since I last was around it. I just dont want to brick my Wii. I hope you understand.

All you technically need is the cIOS installed. You don't even have to install the WiiGator gamma loader.

So if you want to update to 4.0 using the guide on yafaze website then just install cIOS36_rev9 which you can get HERE.

After you download cIOS36_rev9 extract it and rename the cIOS36_rev9-Installer.dol file to boot.dol and then create a folder naming it cIOS. Now place the boot.dol file into the cIOS folder. Now place the cIOS folder in the SD://apps directory on the SD Card.

You now have 2 choices to update/install the cIOS...

1) WAD Install:

google and download IOS36-64-v1042.wad and place it in the root of the SD Card. Then start the cIOS installer via the Homebrew Channel and choose WAD method when the cIOS installer ask what method to use.

2) Network:

Start the cIOS installer via the Homebrew Channel and choose NETWORK method when the cIOS installer ask what method to use. This will download the needed files via WiFi.

You only have to do 1 of the above options.

After you have installed the cIOS you can then follow the steps to update to 4.0 on the yafaze website.

Alright, so its more simple than I thought it was. Thanks so much. I'm gonna try to update in a little bit and I will let you know how it goes.

Also, any suggestions on whether to use method 1 or 2 on yafaze's site? I don't think I have ever had the need for a Trucha signed disk. What are the chances that I would need to retain this functionality? At the moment I am going with method 1.

If you haven't ever used them in the past I doubt you will in the future.

Yes it boots backups. So it is kind of pointless if you have a Modchip.

However the USB Loader (which usses the same cIOS as Wiigator) can be used to boot games from a USB HDD device. So you can rip the games to the Hard Drive then use the USB Loader to boot and play the games off the Hard Drive.
