Question about the Wii & Wiikey.

I'm about to buy a Nintendo Wii, I learned that it can be modified and, of course, I'm interested. I know the PROs are that I can download and burn games but what would be the CONs?

I also read something about a homebrew channel, but I have no idea what that is. Can someone please explain this to me, and also, if I get the Wiikey, will I be losing that? I read it has something to do with updating, so would it be necessary to update?
