Thanks for the google reference but I should of been a little clearer could someone let me know what they have adjusted there "Liteon Drive" pot to for a best results? i.e. 3.5, 3.8, 3.0 etc

Actually since I started that post I guess i can join in this conversation. If you read the posts specifically the 5th and 6th you would see the 2 drives gave rather drastically different starting readings. So because of this its at first glace apears the "perfect" setting will be based on each drives starting point. Although this is only 2 drives that I have taken readings on. So please post your initial reading and what you find to be the best for you and maybe we can narrow it down to a optimal setting.
Also to anyone else familiar with Pot calibration the next time you open a lite-on please let us know your original reading and if you adjust what you finish on.

Lite on new type DVD drive
original pot settings = 5.05
I have now adjusted to = 4.75 (working great)
For info: with the laser pointing skywards the DVD pot is the one on the left side and the readings should be taken from top left and right hand solder bumps, ensure your muilti meter is set to 20k.

My Xbox 360 is having trouble reading game discs only. It seems to read music cds and movie DVDs just fine. It will sometimes not recognize that the game disc is in the drive, it'll say "reading...reading...reading" then "open tray". Sometimes when the game does start up, it will run for like 15 seconds and then I'll get the error message "disc is unreadable". I have a Lite-On DVD Drive. Would I need to adjust the DVD potentiometer even if the drive plays DVD movies but not game discs?

Are you saying, yes to adjusting the potentiometer? And eventually my drive will still have to be replaced? Why do think the drive will eventually fail?
Is there a reason why the drive will read a normal movie dvd and not a game disc? Does this have something to do with dvd movies being on single layered dvd discs, and game discs being on double layered discs? Is it possible that the laser has enough power to read a dvd movie, but not a game disc?
I contemplated purchasing a new lite-on drive. However, according to the tutorials I've viewed, I would either need to take out the PCB board from the old drive and place it in the new drive, or flash the new drive. It looks like in order to do the PCB board swap on a Lite-On drive it would require soldering?? I have no experience soldering such equipment. Also, I have no experience performing the flashing of a PCB board.
Hope this post wasn't too much information/questions. I've been trying to figure this out about a week. Thank you for all your help.

Yes the dual layer is why it has problems with games. you dont swap the board you just flash however you would most likely have someone in ur area do it for you. just look on Craig's list or equivalent for xbox modders in your area they should be able top help you replace the drive.

So I performed the potentiometer adjustment on my lite-on dvd drive last night on my xbox 360. The stock/original resistance (at the 20 k Ohm setting) was 5.47. I adjusted and attempted to play game discs at 4.63, 4.09, 3.53 and 3.16. The adjustments did not seem to help the problem at all. I am still unable to read game discs. However, my Xbox 360 can still read a dual layer DVD disc (Dodgeball). Also note, I cleaned laser lens with alchohol prior to last try at 3.16 reading.
Why can my Xbox read and play a dual layer DVD disc but says my game discs are "unreadable"? Where should I go from here? I may try greasing the drive motor and arms, but they seem fine. Thanks.

Are you trying to play back ups or originals?
If backups, what media are you using?

Well to be honest with you, it sounds like your drive is dead. You could always just keep lowering the resistence of the pot and then stop when it plays, but this will burn the drive out quicker. Otherwise, I would recommend buying a new drive or laser.
Try searching, its fun.

Do know why movie double layered movie DVDs will play, and game discs will not?
I'm assuming since movies play that the laser has the power to play it. So the problem must be related to something specific to reading game discs, which DVDs don't have. Could it be some code/key used on game discs?

Game discs spin a lot faster that DVDs do, this may be a contributing factor. I also have a feeling that the reflection from a game disc is lower than that from a dual layer movie disc.
Try searching, its fun.

I found a post on yahoo:
"From what I hear, it's a software update from Microsoft that's the problem, it makes the laser try to read the disk too close to the center on startup. For CDs and DVDs, that's fine, since they have data there - But 360 games don't.
The only way I get mine to work is to open and close the disk tray and let it try to read again. Then repeat. A lot. Generally takes 5-10 minutes of this before it'll finally read the disk."
Does this explaination seem plausible?

It does indeed. I know of a fix on Hitachi drives where a piece of plastic is placed on the laser so when the drive moves to the center to look for the start data, it thinks its closer than it acctually is. I tried it at one point, and couldn't get it working. There is a tutorial somewhere on Xbox scene I think.
Edit: also look for a rubber band trick, ive heard of this working.
