Is your wiikey soldered to your wii or is it connected with a wii-clip?

Updating to version 4.0 firmware will not affect your modchip in any way

Maybe it did... have you checked? :)

Have you checked the wiikey install? Perhaps something has happened to it in that year it wasn't used. Was your console moved/knocked around at all that you know of?

EDIT: Oh, and change the thread title before your post gets closed...

i have the original wiiikey soldered to the wii. the only games i ever played copied were ssbb and mario kart. neither game is being read anymore. all i could think of is the actual chip solder not good anymore. it wont read any discs including the config discs or anything. im using philips cdrs and verbatim dvdrs. when i had ssbb working back in the day it was the jap version so i got the japanese channels when i updated to jap. but i fixed that with a usa smash bros and now im back at 4.0U. but like i said its as if they wii doesnt even see the wiikey anymore so its probly a solder issue. how do i open it up.? do i need a special toool?

You'll need this screwdriver to open it... (or one similar, I'm not trying to promote DX or anything... just showing you the type you need.)

Some discs go bad, especially when they are't played for a long period of time. Did you try a new burn? Don't go too haywire before you do this.

gameover's right. Optical media degrades over time. I've had a couple games burned on off-brand disks that stopped reading after 4 - 5 months.

Not yet. I've tried everything to fix it myself and have given up. I'm going to be sending it to nintendo on friday hopefully.

I found my tri-wing screwdriver, but the spare drive is at my mom's house. I'm going up there thursday anyway so I'll pick it up then.
