Maybe you could swap the PCB of the 79 to a working Hitachi just to read the key. I would recommend once you get the key, buy yourself a BenQ and spoof the drive along with the key.

And if anyone ever needs validation as to why they need to save save save their key, heres another prime example.

Just like a friend of mine had his flashed by someone else, the person didn't send him his key and he thought he was screwed that he couldn't upgrade his drive because he didn't have the original firmware.

I have my FW saved in probably 10 different places, I AM NOT going to lose that thing.

And yeah, get a BenQ, much more reliable than any of the Hitachis. But I believe you can replace the laser, or use Jungle Flasher to unlock it..Not sure on that one though, I have Windows 64 bit, Jungle Flasher is a wee buggy on a 64bit OS.

Yeah, gotta keep the keys or else when something like that happens Microsoft gets to make more money. One of their little tricks to keep people handing money over. When that happens they want you to have two choices,
1. Pay them to fix it
2. Buy a new system

Either way they win and you lose. It is a privilege we hold to play one of their consoles. That is why I commend Team Jungle and everyone else who has helped in giving us what we paid for when we originally bought these consoles. Not talking about pirating or anything like that, I'm talking about letting us get the use out of the system that it is capable of without forking over money every 15 minutes to Microsoft.

So, always remember to save your keys! And thanks to everyone that has contributed!!!
