I believe DVD is 480p, so 720p MKV is the way, but might want to look up on that

The DVD's 480i, the .mkv's 720p, so your .mkv is the way to go.

KajNrig where did you find that info. I have been reading and some places say that h264 (AKA MKV) is just a compressed format of a dvd. So if it is compressed doesnt that mean that the orginal source (DVD) is better in quality?

h264 is a type of compression, not a compressed DVD. A 480i movie can be ripped and upscaled to 720p using h264 compression, but you are not increasing the quality - just stretching. You can't make pixels - you can fudge around with them, but you can't create what's not there to begin with.

I can guarantee that the 720p version you downloaded is compressed from the HD source (in this case blu ray) - not ripped/upscaled from the DVD version. A blu ray movie (in this case marley and me) is full 1080p. Whether a 720p mkv compressed from a 1080p source will always look better than anything coming from a standard DVD is really up to the viewer and the type of television.
