if the liteon drive has already been flashed,

to update it to a newer firmware would you just need a sata card?

yeah, a compatible one with jungleflasher. You don't need a key reader if it has already been flashed.

the card i've got is a vt6421a raid card, just to confirm this is the right one?

Yeah it is the right one but make sure the VIA driver is removed so you don't freeze when you go to erase the firmware.
