I have a korean softmod wii and the firmware is 3.2U. I was curious updating it but scared to try because I read a forum that it might brick the wii. But now I have a firmware 4.0U, here is my questions:
1. can I play original games? I'm planning to buy super smash bros brawl.
2. can I play online?
3. my firmware is 4.0U and it updates itself that means I can use wi-fi?
4. if my firmware is 4.0 did it remove the softmod?
note: I don't have homebrew channel, I only had backup gamma laucher v3

I believe you can answer all your own question, if you have any original US games or any backup games. You were in 3.2 so everything works fine and then update to 4.0, have you tried your back up games?
Or you just got the Wii have it modded by somebody else and just upgrade to 4.0 without even bothering to test if the softmod works..
I don't have any original games but I have burn games. I just tested the firmware 3.2 in just one day and it's good. I been playing chocobo dungeon without any problem.
I ask these questions because the store(client there) told me that I cannot go online and they said that it is a softmod wii. I google the softmod wii and they say that I can go online in a softmod wii. I got confuse that's why. I'm new in this thing because my last console is ps1.
Then yes you can go online there are like few games that need to be registered (soccer 2009), 99% most games you should be able to go online.
since you updated online to 4.0, is it still working now? or the game you tested is now block? If it block then you need to update the softmod.. e.g. IOS60/IOS61.
yeah, mostly of my burn games are working except for the endless ocean. now I'm relief, now I can finally buy super smash bros brawl. thank you so much for the info.
I called the store and I ask them if they have super smash bros brawl and I ask them if it will work in a korean softmod wii. He told me that they tested it in a korean softmod wii and it didn't work they said.
I read a thread about the issue in korean softmod wii and he ask the same question if the original game will work. Somebody answered that yes it will work by using a gecko channel. I research again what is gecko channel and how to install it. My problem is I can't install it because I don't have homebrew channel either the WAD installer. I know that firmware 4.0 is blocking something that could not install the homebrew channel.
Can I use disk channel to play original ntsc games? I really want to spend money for super smash bros brawl but I don't want to waste money for testing it. My chance here is 50-50.
Mine is Japanese softmod to English US. it was 3.2U and I have just taken the risk to upgrade it. It upgraded to 4.0U and guess what i am pretty happy. It didnt delete the HomeBrew Channel, Softmod, etc. So everything works the same as before with the latest firmware, now I have Wii Shop, Forecast channel, News channel, And I can go to the Nintendo channel as well. So Now I can use all the new features without bricking the Wii. Great I tried it after I saw this post. I played not original games and it works perfect, but I didnt try original as I dont have one yet.
