Hi.

I have problems with burning X360 games. Sometimes it works, but most of the time it doesn't. I use ImgBurn 2.3.2.0 and have a SONY OPTIARC DVD RW AD-7170A.

I don't know if the problem is my burner or my pc. I assume it is the burner, but I'm not sure. Please help me with that, is the Sony Optiarc inappropriate???

In the case it is I'll have to buy another burner. Which one is the best for burning X360 games???

Which one is the best for making X360 backups??? Is there a burner that can do backups without flashing it with new firmware???

Thank You in advance.

What brand of media are you using?

How fast do you burn?

VERBATIM DVD+R DL, speed 2.4x, layerbreak 1913760.

Usually an error appears on half way of burning when it is still on layer 0.

I tried 2.4x, 2x and 1x speed but it goes always at 2.4x, seems 2x and 1x are not supported.

My old burner was a Pioneer but it was from 2003 and the 360 wasn't reading my burned games. I ordered a new LG GH22LP20 from Amazon for around $30 and got it in 2 days (standard shipping). Now all my games work flawlessly. Just a suggestion :)

I purchase a Phillips-BenQ DW1640 in 2005, I've been able to backup all my games with no problem at all. I love this drive.

Why do you guys always try to burn Verbatims that get the best results at a speed of 8x so slow?
Try burning faster instead of slower and see what happens.

By the way, one of the best burners for Xbox backups is said to be Pioneer DVR-112D. I needed one anyway so I bought that one.

Xbox 360: Slim untouched with a faked 320 GB harddrive for XBL, phat with LT 3.0, played Halo early, so going on live would be an instand ban, also with a faked 320 GB harddrive
PS3: Untouched 160 GB Slim, 60 GB Fat with latest Rogero and 160 GB internal harddrive.
PSVita: hardly ever play it
GameCube: Black with a Viper chip installed. With gameboy player. Trying to get a Wavebird controller.

2.4x is pretty much universally agreed upon as the optimal burn speed... i know i've burned all my backups at 2.4x and never had a problem.

if you can burn at 8x without trouble then so be it... but for the majority of people 2.4x is the way to go

There were actually some guys who tested this with Nero CD DVD speedtest. Their tests gave the results I am talking about, there were less errors on the media when burned with 8x than with lower speed. Wish I could still find the link, it was in an amazon review.

By the way, T F 7, when you are from the UK, amazon offers the Pioneer DVR-115d for 24.39 Pound.

I'm not from UK.
I found these in my country:

- Pioneer DVR-116DBK and DVR-116D
- Pioneer DVR-216DBK and DVR-216BK

All for around 27-28€. I assume that the letters BK stays for black, not sure about DBK and BK.
Are these ok??? Which of the two is better???

I find it strange that my Sony Optiarc burns everything perfectly, but Dual Layers. Is it possible that is broken only for DL??? Shall I try to clean it with a CD-cleaner???

Update ImgBurn to the latest version. That almost certainly is not the cause of your problem, but you should do it anyway. Also, do you have the latest firmware installed on the DVD writer? The latest firmware for that writer is 1.05. Sometimes a firmware update can fix issues with particular media.

I agree with Eisherz about burn speed too. 2.4X is only "universally agreed" upon because most people just believe what they read on forums, not because they have any hard evidence that shows 2.4X is the best. With my burners (both Sony Optiarc, an AD-7200S and an AD-7240S) I get the best results at 8X with Verbatim MKM-003 8X rated media. It's worth trying burns at different speeds and doing a scan, because the optimal burn speed depends on the drive (and drive firmware) and the media, but assuming slower is always better is just plain wrong.

I successfully installed the latest firmware (1.04 according to this: http://www.sony-optiarc.us/en/support-se...-ad-series.html ) and I burnt a game successfully, but this was probably luck.

Last time I burnt Street Fighter IV and today while playing I got an error about cleaning the disk etc. and it hit me back to dashboard.

So there is no importance what Pioneer model I buy??? All the same for X360 games???

Firmware 1.05 is here: -

http://www.sony-optiarc.eu/supportservic...cs/ad7170a.html

The supported media list shows both Verbatim MKM-003 8X and the older MKM-001 2.4X discs.

If you want to get an idea of the quality of the burns you're getting with the new firmware, put the burned game disc in the drive, then download Nero CD-DVD speed here: -

http://www.cdspeed2000.com/download.html

Run it and click on the Disc Quality tab, check all of the boxes on the right apart from Quick scan, set the speed to 4X in the drop-down list and hit Start. It'll take a while to complete, but once it's done, post a screenshot of the results.

I can't change the program language to english, so I translated the important things. I did it before updating to firmware 1.05. In the beginning I had 1.02 then yesterday I updated to 1.04 and today to 1.05.

Those burns are awful. What speed were the discs burned at? If you're using 8X rated media, sometimes forcing really slow burns will give you terrible results like that. It could just be that you need a new drive of course as your Optiarc burner is quite old now and the firmware hasn't been updated in a while. It should give better results than that with Verbatim discs though, so try an 8X burn and see how that scans.

Just for info, the PIE maximum shouldn't exceed 280 and the PIF maximum shouldn't exceed 32. A single high spike can usually be ignored though. Your best burn gave PIE max of 610 and PIF max of 68, which is pretty much a coaster, although updating the firmware to 1.05 has improved things over the other burn - it's still far from acceptable though. I've just scanned one of my burns using the same Verbatim media burned at 8X on an Optiarc AD-7240S and I get max PIE of 12 and max PIF of 4.

Can you scan that last disc again and post a screenshot of the graph?

Quote:

maximum: 59
average: 0.02
sum: 5260

The maximum PI failures are still well above what's acceptable, but if you look at the averages for the PIEs and PIFs, they're fine, so it suggests that you're getting error spikes, rather than high errors consistently throughout the disc. That means you're likely to get burns that work, but they're going to be prone to crashing as the laser hits the part of the disc where the errors and failures are high.

Ultimately though, you've tried updating the firmware and you've tried burns at different speeds and none of them are acceptable (based on what you've posted - screenshots of the graph will show a fuller picture of what's going on), so getting a new burner is going to be your best option I think.

The Pioneer drives you listed are a good choice. The 216 is a SATA drive and the 116 is PATA, so if you buy one, make sure you get the right one for your PC. Also, check for new firmware for it before you start burning any discs (1.09 is the latest for those drives at the time of writing this).

Thanks man!

It seems I have PATA...

I assume that all the Pioneers they're selling in the shops at present are excellent for X360 burning, don't think it is possible to know which model is better. Someone correct my if I'm wrong!

Thank You Again!

I see this is a quality burn comparing the previous ones.
Anyway I ordered today a PIONEER DVR-116D for a reasonable price of 26€. Hope I won't have any more troubles, I read about people complaining about DVR-216D, hopefully the DVR-116D won't cause these problems.

I bought a new burner, the PIONEER DVR-116Dbk (same as 116D).

I updated the firmware to 1.09.

And burned a game which I burned with the old Sony Optiarc, too.

I tried to do the quality test, but it says that the burner does not support the test, so I had to do the test with the old Optiarc.

The results are not so good as they should be.

I'm so disappointed, the results should be perfect! Can someone tell me why they aren't???
